A while ago you could even down a hummingbird with a single 7.62 bullet, if you hit the engine through a weakspot.
The tailrotor is always easy to hit. Good against AI but an experienced pilot can still fly and land well enough without it.
I have had experiences back in the Arma II days when the AI set to "Super" difficulty have taken out mobile UH-60s with handguns from several hundred meters away. I suppose if you're just that good, you can easily take out a helicopter with anything. Now, it's much more practical to engage a helicopter with .338 or 9.3x64mm unless it's a gunship or VTOL, in which case you better step it up to .408 or .50.
20mm and 25mm rifles make it a lot easier but they're only from a few mods.
Tailrotors are not hard to hit at all. Much easier than the pilot anyway.
Depends on the angle of the shot really.
It can also bepend on the aircraft. Hummingbirds for example are fairly easy to take down with small arms since it is so poorly protected. There is that whole open area to the side, and the very weak glass protecting the pilots. They also have pretty much no armour protecting vital areas. Compare that to the heavier gunships which have fully enclosed cockpits with strong glass, and even a good deal of armour protecting vital systems.
So you need a powerful enough round, hitting the right area, enough times, to take down a heli.
