I don't know too much about cpus. But I'm pretty sure I cant replace my old AMD cpu with an intel cpu. I also dont know what I would need to be able to install an intel cpu.
Right now I'm on an AMD FX 8320 and all I can do is just barely run Arma 3 in editor mode. So I'm looking for a new cpu. Unfortunately I have zero knowledge when it comes to cpus and sockets and all that stuff.
Here's what I have and recommend:
- AMD quad (Athlon? I don't know the serial number) clocked at 4.2 ghz. Great for what it is but I recommend a higher clock speed and if you stream or play stuff in backdrop get a 6 core. Keep in mind that it is better to get a fast 4 core than slow 8 core as clock speed per core is VERY important and more cores do not guarantee processing power. Arma 3 supposedly uses all 4 cores but more than often 1-2 cores get parked and it all relies on other specs. Any AMD quad with 4ghz or higher would do but the higher the clock speed the better. Optimally 6 core with high clock speed is best choice here.
- Kingston 20gb ram (ddr3 8x8x4) A3 needs 8gb ram maximum for itself as it does not consume more however your system needs around 4gb, so for best performance get around 12gb ram or more, I find A3 doesn't cross 30-40% of my ram used even though ram is VERY important to A3, if you're low on it you will stutter lag so make sure ram is in check.
- R7 gamer GPU with 2gb ddr5, now while mine works just fine and I have A3 almost maxed out, my frames spin around 40-50 and I am lucky if I can get 60 in A3, that said you should have a decent GPU with more vram onboard however A3 is not really GPU intense, specially if you run textures and models on highest it is your ram and cpu that take most of the load.
- Storage space: Anything will work but for best performance you will need either a fast HDD or even SSD if you play with a lot of mods like ace bundled servers need you to download. SSD does not give you fps boosting but speeds up load times and also object loads in ram which prevernts from stutter lag.
- Cooling. A3 is for some reason very intense on my rig, so good cooling is a must unless you already have a decent cooling installed.
In general a3 is well optimized for singleplayer however it has poor server-side optimization, which is where it comes to your gaming choice. If you play altis life or other pvp moronery then expect low frames and glitches, if you play vanilla PvE servers expect good performance, if you play hardcore servers with ace expect great fps most of the time but sometimes frame drops bellow 10. It all comes to your preferences, choose whatever you can afford best.

So some "better" CPUs you can get for that socket is the AMD FX-9370, FX 9590 and AMD FX-8350 etc, I believe. The former costs about $200 new though and it isn't really recommended because they get so hot it is ridiculous and you are highly, highly recommended to get a really huge PSU to power it (230w to run the CPU), the mobo, the GPU etc. If I remember right, even AMD does not recommend upgrading a AM3+ socket beyond, actually, what you have right now.
What is your upgrade budget though? Do you mind getting the CPU used?
As a solution now, you can overclock your CPU but be warned. This will take even more power (so your GPU needs to be high watt/good quality) and things will get hot, so you need decent cooling. A Cooler Master Hyper EVO 212 is always recommended because, gosh darn it, that thing is a work of absolute beauty for below $30.
EDIT
Oh yea, MAVEN is right. On official servers or good servers, you should get pretty decent FPS. It is on heavily modded or different game mode servers that things start to get horrible.

If your hoping for great performance your hoping in the wrong area. The number 1 thing that I have found to affect performance in this game on multiplayer is the server you are playing on. One server I can get 70+ FPS constant then the other one I'm like 25 - 40 FPS average. It all depends on the server.
That is actually a relief, so thank you. I've got over $1k invested into my PC, which may not be a lot to the silver spoon community, but to a poor boy like me it's a fortune. So it's nice to know that if I find the right server I'll likely perform much better.
I tried to overclock my GPU but only noticed maybe a 3-5fps increase.
It is sad that your awesome CPU makes barely a difference. It has to be something server side that could be fixed, like what is currently plaguing Star Citizen online (stuck at 20fps even if you have a beast for a PC).
For instance, one server I really enjoy but I average 35 FPS when it's full just because it has a lot of missions going on, ai on the map etc etc etc etc etc etc
