I get no fps drop from smoke or fire.
Large amounts of AI or towns yes fps drops.
So am I a shocking human because my pc doesnt have the problems you have???
Nathan i guarentee if you have a firefight in a town with a smoke grenade you will go under 60 fps. Go zaros, get 1 squad and a car and blow the car up, then throw a smoke and come back to me. That is 4 men 1 car and a smoke grenade = fps doom. (and you could drop with less)
Did you read the OP? He is talking about 1 smoke grenade csusing drops from 300fps to 130fps or on a weak system drops from 50fps to 15 fps. Not as you suggest....dropping below 60fps when in a large town with an exploding car, smoke grenade and a firefight....although i will try this out in the editor next time im on to get numbers.
It is very disproportionate to what it should be and shows a clear oversight or lack of competance. That is why the OP is annoyed.
But they are still objects and all objects cause FPS decrease. If you removed the birds, snakes, and rabbits you would be getting alot more frames...
they should be disabled in MP in general so everyone can get better performace
To me it feels like Arma maxes out of memory at quite a low value and anything after that causes lag. (Smoke is often the straw that breaks the camels back).
Towns really increase the journey to this threshold, so it doesn't take much inside one to experience drops. the only solution to it on this engine is to use smaller towns or less clutter dense terrains. (And then they release Tanoa.....oh)

So your telling me you drop by fps by more than half from a smoke grenade haha what a load of crap.
