Arma 3

Performance issues
So, I have a Toshiba L50-B-16C notebook. Totally not good for gaming, but it does the job for me.

I saw the minimum requirements of this game and I realized that my build could easily run this game even on higher settings than the minimum, so I bought it immediately.

So the minimum requirements should be...
-Intel HD 4000 - good because I have an AMD R7 M260 2GB which is pretty weak, but still much better than the Intel HD 4000 graphics card, which is btw my integrated card.
-some 2Ghz dualcore CPU - I have an Intel I7-4500U, it meets the requirements.
-I have 8Gb RAM which is perfectly enough.

Still even on the lowest settings I have like a maximum of 40fps with terrible drops to like 8fps every seconds, so it's pretty much unplayable.
(I also have some bugging textures on the ground if my terrain settings are higher than low, but that's a minor problem (flashing white spots)).

What could be the problem? I have the most recent GPU driver and as you can see my notebook easily meets the minimum requirements. Using the recommended video settings puts my settings to something close to standard, and the fps here could be easily enjoyable, however the fps drops ruin the whole game for me.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Even the high end desktops have performance problems, it's the game and well your laptop too ...

It's Arma
Just deal with it

You can try disabling the in-game Steam overlay, but other than that Arma is finicky when it comes to performance. There are some guides that cover the topic if you want to take a look.

The arma minimum specs are made up, or maybe they mean you can start the game, but ♥♥♥♥ the rest!

I run a i76700k and i still get 60/80 fps in koth, and in the city 40/50, and thats one of the top cpu's.

Also you do not even meet the min requirements, because your cpu has a U behind it, http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-4500U-vs-Intel-Core-i5-4460

Arma has always been cpu intensive, and with that cpu you will never cut it, whatever you do, even if you delete the game arma will still run at -100 fps.

hah :D
I see...
well, I guess I should get a good gaming PC anyways.
Btw I watched a couple of performance guides, but you know.. they're made for better computers :D

I had the same problem before when I was dedicating too much RAM to the game and not the integrated graphics card. Integrated graphics use RAM not dedicated memory. So try lowering how much RAM you dedicate to the game. 2 gb goes towards graphics, 2 gb to operating system, and 4 gb to the game, if you are lucky that will work. Also set your exThreads to 7. You have a dual physical core processor but a quad logical core processor because of hyperthreading and also turn on all of the hyperthreading capabilities in the parameters section of the launcher.

Not true. I have an I5-4210U and I play just fine with no lag. He is dedicating too much RAM to the game and not taking into account the Operating system and Integrated Graphics.

MY SPECS:
I5-4210U @ 1.7ghz(2.4ghz turbo clock) 2 core 4 thread processor
Intel HD Graphics 4400 1.8gb @ 1000mhz
8gb Dual Channel Ram @ 1600mhz
700gb HDD @ 5200rpm

You have me beat in every category except RAM. Take it from me. You have a good enough rig to play Arma. You most likely would need to dedicate 3.75gb Ram to -maxmem or 4gb. Try it out and in my earlier post I said that you should set -exThreads=7 and enable all of the features of hyperthreading in the Arma 3 launcher. I did that and it worked. Our processors are of the same generation, yours just has a higher clock speed than mine.

I dedicate 4.5gb of Ram to Arma 3 but my integrated graphics use less Ram. You should be good at -maxmem=4096.

where do I change these settings?

Found it. It actually seems to work :D Thank you.

I would love to see a recording of your fps then, as i do not believe a single bit if what you just said. The graphics might be true but when i had an i5-2400 and had 8gb of ram i also had 4gb to the game and still ran it like ♥♥♥♥, might not have made the requirements but still, neither does your cpu if i am correct.

And if you are correct btw, you found a fix for everybody their fps problems and you should have been here ages ago lol.

After I saw the comment I changed the launch settings and I only made a quick test, and my max fps seemed to be a little less than it was before, however I experienced no fps drops anymore. But as I said, I only made a quick test but I'm gonna play this game later this day, and we'll see how it goes.

So yeah, a little bit less fps drops, but they still happen pretty frequently. Sure, it's playable, but not enjoyable. I either have to adapt to 15-27 fps or I'll have to get a new build. I think I'll choose the second one.

welcome newcomer to the wonderful world of arma optimization!

Krallhalla what is the hard drive in your computer? One thing people forget about ARMA is that a fast hard drive has a major impact on fps drops.

Now what i'm about to say may not be 100% correct as its what I've been told but since getting my SSD I feel inclined to believe it:

ARMA 3 is bad for using RAM, it doesn't use it as well as most games to cache textures (meaning it doesn't have to load them from the file every time you look at them) instead it does just that, loads it from the file everytime you look meaning that its constantly using your hard drive. So if you get alot of FPS drops one of the main causes to this is a slow hard drive, and I can attest to this because I had a very old slow 1TB hard drive and upgraded to a 256GB Samsung SM951 m.2 SSD (not SATA) and a 2TB 7200RPM HDD and installed ARMA on the SSD. Since this I have almost no FPS drops, and when I do it tends to be down to completely seperate issues.

tl;dr: while your pc may meet the minimum requirements a slow hard drive will cause constant framedrops in ARMA....... cos ARMA
