Edit existing ones: Uuhm. No idea. But it's easy to test, just start the story with a custom girl, go sleep (ingame ;)), go to char editor and edit that girl, load the game and see how the girl looks like.
Seating chart - choose character - edit character - exit with saving.
You can't edit their voice, traits and pregnancy state in this mode though.
Btw characters used in your storyline gameplay are stored separately from character cards, so your edits won't affect original character cards.
