BH Arena Veteran E Gold - Possible?
I've been trying this challenge for a while now, and it seems impossible. It's the one where you're in a crap Gopher vs. 3 Scouts with Gravity Missiles. I have managed ONCE to destroy one of them, but the other 2 whittled my health away before I could get either of them. Do most people cheat to get this ach (via mods), or is there actually some legit way to do it? My technique has been to fly backwards trying to focus one of them down, relying on slight side movements and the point defense to get the missiles. Is there something I'm missing? I haven't found any guides on the Internet anywhere. Maybe you just need to be a god at dodging the missles and take them on head-on, but that seems unlikely.

Please help!

It's doable, but it is one of the hardest ones to manage. Just focus on one at a time and try to keep mobile.
I thought I'd pop back in to share an explanation of what finally worked for me (I've been trying this one since well before I posted to forums), just in case anyone else gets stuck on this.

Basically, I moved backwards firing the entire time. After the initial exchange where they get close, fire at you, take some damage, and back off a bit, I went into the Tactical screen and manually targetted the one with the lowest health.

From that point on, I would focus my fire on that one craft. Any time he went (my) left, I would strafe that way just a hair, and slowly turn fire toward him. This would allow my bullets to take out the incoming missiles (I may have inched just out of their range or used the Point Defense a few times, too; I don't know), and hit my target without changing my line of fire too much, thus preventing a missile from sneaking through.

I hope that helps SOMEONE, since I couldn't find any useful descriptions of winning maneuvers. Just keep at it, trying slight variations of the "flying backward the entire time" strategy. I don't know if my method worked for any specific reason; honestly it felt a little random.
I wanted to chime in here. I beat this on Aug 25 in the early AM after countless frustrating attempts. I wanted to put my fist through the wall after losing repeatedly, but I think I discovered something that should help you guys out.

Firstly, I attempted the moving backwards thing. Doesn't work. Ultimately, you will be caught by a missile and slowed. It's inevitable. I tried moving backwards straight. Moving backwards while slowly strafing from side to side. Moving backwards while very rapidly strafing from side to the side. You may take out a lot of missiles, and you may pepper the enemy craft, but when they get lower on shields (or perhaps as a result of just normal AI movement), they will dodge to the side and out of the way and their shields will shoot back up. Most importantly, you line yourself up perfectly to get slaughtered by their beams. Don't bother moving backwards.

Now, for the part that should help you folks out: Just sit still. Really, that's it. You may want to charge the pack at the start and get a straight-line volley off on one of the ships, but after that, *do not move*. For some reason, possibly thanks to the point defense, possibly due to the spraying you'll have to do, and/or possibly due to the tech on your ship, you shouldn't die for most attempts *if you just sit still*.

I know this goes against everything you're reading so far. But I swear I beat it by not moving an inch after charging the pack off the start. My hypothesis is that your point defense is most effective at a standstill. Not only that, but the slow effect from the missiles doesn't really matter much if your intent is to be at a standstill.

Ok, so you're at a standstill, now what?

Well... at this point you simply have to practice and learn to lead the ships. I know this is not the easy answer you were hoping for, but it's likely the only thing that's going to work. I mean honestly, whether you move or stand still, you're still going to have to shoot the darn things, so why not do it standing still? At that point the only thing moving is them, so you don't have to factor in your own movement into your shooting. Not only that, but with the slowing missiles, you're not going to be moving anyway.

The obviously extremely difficult part is shooting them. Their patterns are, as far as I can tell, not systematic in any way. You *must* lead them out. Lead them out a lot. Test out varying levels of leading them; you'll see. If they're further away, lead them out less. If they're closer, lead them out a lot. Your bullets will curve out. Watch the bullets' path. Practice, practice, and practice some more. Occasionally, the one you're aiming for will back straight up and come straight in. If you have good reflexes, and after enough practice, you'll learn to take advantage of those brief straight shots. Remember: Lead, lead, lead, lead, lead. Lead them out. If you don't lead them out all the time, you won't hit them. Slowly, as you get better, you will start catching your target ship with a curved hail of bullets, rip off his shield, and do some hull damage. Keep working at it!

I'm sure you still don't believe me that standing still will work. Just try it. Try it, go sit still, pick a ship (you don't have to lock onto it), hold down your shoot key permanently, and shoot at the ship. You'll survive, unbelievably, for the majority of your attempts. There *will* be tries where you die while standing still. That's fine. Just go back and try again. Something good about perma-spraying bullets everywhere is that you will catch a number of their missiles throughout the fight, but please, focus *strictly* on the ships. Remember, the standstill method doesn't care that you get slowed so missiles are not a priority.

I worked on this fight dozens and dozens of times, trying everything I could. I nearly even gave up on the standstill method. Once I realized I was getting better and ripping off the shield with some regularity and damaging the hull, my confidence was restored. Then, once you blow up at least one of the ships, your survival goes up a lot and darn near becomes guaranteed. Just pick a new target and resume leading it out.

I hope this helps anyone in any way, even if the news is not the easy path that you were hoping for. This challenge is time-consuming and incredibly hard. It will take practice and perhaps dozens of tries and deaths. Just stick with it. Let me know if you guys take it down! Good luck.
I havent done the BH missions, but this 'sit still' strategy sounds like fun. I might go do it!
Heh, that was actually the very first thing I tried. That's actually how I got past the bronze and silver versions of the event, but it didn't work at all for me on gold. Honestly, this event felt the most random of all of the BH challenges; it's almost the only one where I think "Tough But Fair" breaks down. It's more like you have to be "Tenacious and Lucky." Try a million different things until the stars align just right, and you'll eventually pass it in a way that you can't recreate later. :spazdreaming:

I just finished the event after hours of frustration. I used the "fly backwards" method, as it was giving me by far the most consistent results. The trick is to never move your mouse pointer. Just set it in one corner of your screen, the one closest to where the ships spawn, fly backwards, keep shooting and pray. The first time i tried it, i got one of the ships into the red for the first time, and realized this might just work. One of the enemy ships will eventually freak out, fly to the side and hit you with a missile, at which point the attempt is over, but, depending on the RNGod this can happen after minutes of flight.
So mere 10 attempts later, one of the ships stayed in my stream of bullets too long and exploded, 20 seconds later I finally won.
It is ironic, after literally hours of staying still, learning to lead my target and never getting one past orange before dying, i finished the event in in 15 minutes of holding S and left mouse button. I was I-I this close to just uninstalling the game. This works guys, don't give up!
Patience is key, I did it by fly backwards and focus at one ship + try to shoot all gravity missiles. I know it's very hard but that's how I did it. Took me many tries to pass this challenge. Good luck. :spazwinky:
Phewh, comrades! I did it in 30 minutes, and now a'm going to tell you THE BIG SECRET!

By "standing still" tactic you'll survive longer, yes, but if you able to destroy even one ship (even drop shield of ship) – you are machine! It’s reeeealy hard to aim.

Move backwards tactic WILL do (no random) and here is what you need to know:

1) Keep enemy to left or right of you – it will make easer to control your ship

2) Most easy to control ship is when enemy is at top of the screen, but ships will frequently fly out of the screen, and you don’t want to lose their sight.

3) Your shield regenerates fast and it’s a key! You can dodge by strafe, but not too much, cause you’ll get rocket eventually and all will be over!

4) The point is that when you drop scouts shield it will move back to regene it! AHA! You can, and you must scare off ships by dropping their shields! That will allow you shield not to be dropped and stay alive long enough. Also by dropping shields you will make some hull damage, so scouts eventually will crack.

5) You can predict witch ship come in next to zap you by looking on his visual shield, and by knowing witch one you hit earlier (that why you don’t want them out of screen)

6) And there is rockets… Point Defense can save you from ONE full health missiles IF it comes from corner. Two, if you move backward, and strafe away. NONE, if you strafe to it, or it moves in front. So to make things easier try not to strafe much (because you risking strafe to missle) and shoot at least two. It will come much easier, when one scout is down.

That’s all. No random, no luck, comrades – just knowledge.
Nicolay's advice has given me the most persistent of results. Within a minute of trying the tactic I managed to destroy one ship and could tackle the other two.

I can however add on to it: during my attempt I did get hit by gravity missiles, so I attempted to shoot down the missiles until I had enough breathing space to pick up enough speed in one direction to continue chase. Veteran E is above all, determination. Not tactics, aiming, or even luck. Just stick with the plan until you beat it.
Guys. Did it in 3 attemps after I realised one simple thing: "LOOK WHERE YOU ARE AIMING AT". Most of the time, I thought I was aiming on a enemy ship but actually I was aiming a few pixels to the side. And most of the time you´re shooting them, they´re shooting you too.

So my tips:
1- Do not zoom it all out. Do some scrolls in until you see the line of fire of your cannons at the edge of the screen.
2- Move backwards. Always. Do not let "S" go until the fight is over.
3- Get closer to the monitor and look really sharply where you are shooting at! There´s a little difference on where your ship aims and where the mouse is at the screen.

Going left or right is easier, but I´ve accomplished doing a full turn. Started to the left and finished almost going to the right. When the enemy ship is off the screen, put the mouse in the center of the octagon that shows where the enemy is, and look at his health to see if you are hitting.

Use strafes, use turns... Focus mainly on the enemy ships and you´ll be surprised on how effective your point defense and the random shooting is.
Good news! I just completed it and got the Arena Champion achievement. And I then successfully recreated the victory condition and won it again!

Strategy: Back downwards and shoot upwards.
Try to keep the ships lined up. Aim on the one that is next to move closer instead of focusing on the same ship.

Victory condition: Enemy spawn at top.
I don't know why, maybe it's something with the spacing when they spawn or how they get lined up or something. Both times I won, the enemy spawned at top. When they spawn at right, one of them will eventually freak out and charge forward instead of backing, and I get caught by a missile when 3 ships are left. That's a game over.

When they spawned at top, one of the ships stayed long enough in my stream of bullets to die instead of backing up and recharging his shields like they usually do all the time. He died quite fast actually. I was surprised. Both times when they spawned at top, one of the ships died fast.

Other then that, I can't think of anything specific I did differently then the billion times I died doing the same tactic. I guess I might have focused a bit more on shooting where the next ship would burst forward then I concentrated on shooting at the missiles, and a little bit more at trying to keep the ships lined up.

That's all. I hope it helps someone! Good luck!
Hi there. I'm glad that setup worked for you. I'm still going to stick with my "sit still" setup. It's truly easier. You can't die if you're sitting still. The game gives you the tech you need to just sit there. You don't have to move. Just sit there and lead them out. You will get it. It just takes patience. Anyway. I am glad to see multiple paths to solve this issue. This is a really hard achievement to get. You should feel accomplished when you reach this milestone. Congratulations and welcome to an incredibly tiny club. You are part of us!
Guys, i'm done it! It's a lot easier when you just dump your armor by pressing "n".

I don't know why you don't die when doing that, I died right away every time when I tried it. I tried that several times. It didn't take many seconds before I got blown away.
Sorry for the necro, but I just got it after 100+ attempts and hours of yelling at my computer (I never do this). It is the hardest event by far - not the good kind of hard, the random one. The painful one.

I used a mix of the above tactics: I started by moving backwards, diagonally, and strafing to get the missiles. In between volleys, occasionally one of them was flying straight, long enough that I could finally take it down (it was also the first time I even got a single one).

Right after this I got hit by a gravity missile, so I switched to the stand still tactic. For some reason the second ship I chose to target was much easier to hit than when using this tactic from the start (so with 3 enemies active). Maybe I was just lucky - I think that definitely played a big part. But probably also because there is obviously 1 gravity missile out of the picture, and they do slow down your ship rotation speed too. Anyway, after the second kill, the last one was a formality - the point defense is enough to cover the 1 remaining gravity missile.

After this I immediately saved and backed up my save file lol

Just adding to the list of experiences here for the future poor souls trying to get this done - this is the only thread I've found about this event in particular.

Good luck. :cleandino:

EDIT forgot to mention, I also started by breaking a few rocks around, down to the green rez, hoping they'd pick it up and it would slow them down a notch. I was that desperate. Don't know if it made any difference but it could have. I think their cargo space is lower than 5 because they can't pick up the blue rez, so just 2 rez is at least half their cargo space. At least 4 rez was picked up at the start in that successful attempt I think. Ideally you'd want one to fill its cargo completely I guess
