I switched weapons around a bit, but I ended up mainly using the Brusher's Pike and Galleon Mortar. For the Pike I chose all the left upgrades since its throw attack is fairly useless. For the Mortar I forget the exact configuration, but the important upgrades are faster aiming and immunity to bomb damage. This allows you to quickly fire short range shots to deal with close enemies. The Mortar is especially good because deflected shots land next to enemies so they often take damage anyway. I didn't actually use my secret skills that much, but Bomb Barrage is pretty good.
General tips:
- Max out your level and weapons before attempting the Who Knows Where segments.
- Avoid close range weapons. With contact damage, slowing effects and dead enemies dropping bombs, getting next to enemies is a bad idea.
- Avoid slow firing weapons as it's more costly when their shots get deflected.
- Aim next to enemies (rather than right at them) with area of effect weapons to avoid the shots being deflected.
- Critical hit chance boosting spirits work well for weapons with crit-boosting upgrades (such as the Pike).
- Without dropped healing items, leechade is basically mandatory.
- Hide behind walls to avoid taking damage. You can take cover like this while using the Mortar for easy kills. This is very important in the Survivor’s and Stranger’s Dream.
And as for the spinning gasfellas... I can't remember having any particular trouble with them. With my setup the Mortar would probably take them out fairly easily.
I hadn't really used the galleon mortar until now, and I can see it being handy in a lot of situations now.
