For anyone who is having trouble with “updating executable.”

There is a problem with Steam DRM (anti-piracy utility), I can see it from steam logs: LaunchApp failed with UpdatingDRM with "16".

I recovered the old executables from an “old installation” of mine. Here's a link to my drive with the working ones. Tested on multiple PCs they seem to work (I haven't tried with the Direct X versions). You can launch as always using steam.

EDIT: the guys in the comments are right to show doubt. Downloading these executables is obviously at your own risk, just as I took the risk of trying them.

EDIT 2: I just tried removing the 3 files of the zip from the installation folder and running the integrity check with steam that downloaded the correct ones and NOW IT WORKS! If you still have the problem try to remove these 3 specific files (AvP.exe, AvP_DX11.exe, AvP_Launcher.exe) and run the integrity check. If that doesn't work, I'll leave the new link to my drive with those executables that work in my case (and now are totally legit, cause steam downloaded all of them).

the game was released in 2010, it's bad abandonware at this point, I doubt that we'll get a fix from some 1st party.

I understand with your edit of the unreliability of the new .exe that was supplied by OP, I too am having problems with the new exe, though I'm glad that you are still getting what you wanted out of the game.

I submitted a ticket to SEGA and they replied but they are asking for more information about the issue to be able to help me. Hope they do.

Hey, Good day.

The files you provided worked to launch the game, however the multiplayer no longer works, it crashes upon trying to launch multiplayer. Any experience with this issue involving those files?

The problem is in two files that for some reason cannot be downloaded easily, it took me about two days of trying and trying. The files are: AvP.exe and AvP_DX11.exe

AvP.exe (CRC32: 408E7744)
AvP_DX11.exe (CRC32: 276BBC1B)

The ones that AvP installs at the beginning do not work.

It seems to be crashing when multiplayer is involved. I was trying that multiplayer trick to get a few achievements in the first level and it always crashes at the same point.

Game starts up fine, but crashes when I flip the switch in the bathroom in the first marine story mission (The one with the dead individual who suffered a chestburster).
Anything I can do? I ran the DX11 version when this happened. Twice.
Also happens in DX9 and the regular unlabeled startup option.
