What is going on with this game?

Like... the game overall is pretty fun experience... as long as you don't get a sudden unexpected crash out of nowhere, or you have weird "updating exec error" even before you launch it. I mean, seeing all these posts of people complaining about crashes and other errors gives the impression that this game is pretty much an abandonware. No updates, no fixes, no solid technical support (some attempts at fixing those problems work for a few players but for others do not).

Why is that? Why is this game so unstable?

BTW, I have managed to fix the updating exec problem but I still get those random crashes during tutorial missions in every of the three campaigns. Though one day when I launched the game and started predator campaign, the game actually didn't crash after looking at the third predator and I don't even know how I "fixed" this but now this problem has reemerged. One of the users of this forum said that "Whatever is going on with that game is a mystery" and it is very true...

I mean, use DXVK for the crashes. I tried telling people once and they couldn't follow directions, so I gave up. Use the dx8 and dx9 dlls, then run the game in dx9. It looks identical and runs smoothly. DXGI dll shouldn't matter, but it might help. It will break the DX11 version, though.

As for the DRM issues, there are modded versions of the .exes that don't seem to have problems validating. You can also try starting the game from Big Picture Mode. Some people say to not start the game for a few days. I can verify that the modded .exes work, and waiting fixed the problem for me. There are way too many threads about this, nobody's reading before they post. This forum needs a moderator to prune the duplicate threads.

Seems like veryfing the game cache helped with the crashing issues. But still thank you for your insights. You're right that forum probably needs a moderator because it can get really hard to navigate so many threads looking for help (my included, sorry!) But this game is pretty much abandoned at this point so I wouldn't hope for any moderation in the near future.

One more insight: the DX9 version of the game runs at low CPU priority by default, and resets to low priority every time you alt-tab back. Use Process Lasso to permanently force a higher priority. Also, run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 7. Don't use the launcher program or default desktop shortcut, as this defaults to DX11 mode.

All right, this will probably be useful when the game starts crashing again (hopefully not) but for now seems like it is workin in DX11 just fine.

People are retarded, that's for sure. I remember one guy crying he wanted me to show a step by step guide of how to click on the download bottom, like if I worked for steam or SEGA. This is abandonware, if you don't know your way around the basics, nobody will be able to help you.

By the way. I fixed the game that way. I got rid of the files I had downloaded and validated files again (it seems they recently fixed the corrupted files) then it will replace 2 files. Then run Steam as Admin (make sure it is Windows 7 compatible) and don't open game from launcher or direct access, but go to folder and open the AVP (x9). I've been playing all morning that way. I'll keep you posted if game crashes or something.
The survival mode also works and it doesn't crash when I kill the first alien anymore. Thank you.

I meant I got rid of the exes someone had shared because the games detects them as corrupted. (I didn't need to relocate or uninstall game)

Yeah! I pretty much did the same thing. Downloaded some files when I had problems with exe updating. But then I validated them due to crashes. Now I have neither crash problems nor updating exec. All is working fine!

Day 2 of me playing the game all morning with 0 issues. No crash, no problem starting. I keep opening the game from the folder and I haven't downloaded new exes. Just the ones I validated yesterday. Played the 3 races, and also survival mode. Will keep you posted.
