Mouse 3 - how does it work

Just got this game - Keeps flashing up 'Hold Mouse 3', which I guess is a close combat move, but holding down mouse wheel doesn't seem to do anything - then I die.
Any ideas? (to be fair I need to try it a bit more - but it was spoiling the immersion trying to work out how to use it)

I'd suggest re-binding the key. Mouse 3 is the default keybind but your mouse driver may believe Mouse 3 is not Middle Mouse Button. Re-bind the key and see if it works then.

Also notice when you look into the keybinds that there is a layout for each species (Predator, Marine, Alien). You'll need to customize each species (3) if you want to change them.

The "Hold Mouse 3" prompt is basically a warning that the enemy is going to try one of their special moves, and you have a chance to counter it and stun them. That, in turn, leads to a chance for you to stun them and end the fight quickly. For instance, if you're playing as a Marine and you're fighting a Xenomorph, that prompt means the Xenomorph is gonna go for a head-bite, which you then can counter by rifle-butting them in the head and following up the rifle-butt with a quick burst of fire to the head.

Secondary key was Left-Alt - Which worked and turns out if i double clicked mouse 3 that worked also. But in the end I mapped Mouse 2 for melee (same as F.E.A.R.) and Grenade as Mouse 3. Works a treat.
