The AvP demo is a player hosted lobby system. One player needs to create a multiplayer lobby and the other players merely need to join that game through the multiplayer menu. I believe the demo allowed players to password lobbies. If you want to play with your friends only, password your lobby.
When in the demo click any button that allows you to create a game room. The password option should be within the room creation menu. I checked my full retail game version and the option is "Public Passworded Slots" defaulted to No. Change that to Yes and it will prompt to enter the password.
If you can't find how to password a game in the demo then the password feature does not exist...though I'm fairly certain it does. Regardless if you manage to password your game there is no living community playing the demo so it's not like your game is going to be flash mobbed by uninvited guests.
