Now this is another real indie gem. Beautiful story, beautiful scenery/environments, and on top of that a beautiful soundtrack. Just what i want from my Indie adventures, the graphics look really stunning too, as could be said about many of these similar games. The puzzles are mostly well done, tho some of them felt a bit tedious and i had to look up a low spoiler guide for a few of them, but that also might be due to the fact that i'm just not always too good at problem solving. All in all tho, most of them were fun to figure out, and the gameplay was nice. If i have to give some really minor complaint, the last chapter in the castle could've included a bit less of backtracking, but i can forgive that, as these kinds of games usually include that anyway. Also some of the dialogue had a bit broken English, but i just found that funny, it was still readable and i could understand everything. Lastly, i don't want to spoil too much, so i'll just end this review by saying that Röki is a great example of "looks can be deceiving", monster or not, he doesn't mean bad. Highly recommended to anyone who loves a good Indie adventure game.

Roki is technically a point and click adventure game, but it also falls into something I call a 'mood game.' It's atmosphere and emotional resonance is far more important than how it actually plays as your investment in the story is what is likely to keep you playing to the end.

Roki tells the story of Tove, the mightiest of girls, who sets out on a journey into a magical world after her younger brother is kidnapped by a raven goddess. With courage and cleverness, she will have to solve many puzzles to reach the raven's mystical castle and rescue her sibling before dark magic claims him for good.

As this brief story description may suggest, Roki feels like an animated family movie turned into a playable game. This is further enhanced by the cartoony models and vibrant cell-shaded style that really pops against the winter snows that cover the ground. To give a solid example of how the game looks and feels, it is very much like the work of the studio that did The Book of Kells and Song of the Sea, but with Scandinavian mythology serving as the story's fantasy roots instead of Irish folklore.

As a point and click adventure game, it is going to have the same pit falls as anything else in the genre. This is not an action heavy game. While most of the puzzles feel reasonably intuitive, getting stuck can really break flow when it happens, especially in the middle chapter which has you navigating a wide open space while working on about ten puzzles at once. This middle chapter can feel really overloading since it has so much going on at once. Too much in fact.

While I loved the first and final section of the game, chapter two was honestly a trial toward the end. Whoever designed that mushroom puzzle in particular should have their family line cursed for the next five generations as it was one of the most tedious things I have ever encountered in one of these games. Not challenging, just involving a lot of running around the same area while having to switch between two masks that help you do different things while you try to reach the goal of this segment.

I'm glad I pressed on because the castle segment was a banger and led to a satisfying conclusion.

This game is amazing. The graphics are incredible, the music fits the vibe perfectly, and the gameplay is very fun. The world landscapes are breathtaking, the puzzles are challenging without being impossible. The storyline is both sad and so very hopeful.
If you enjoy cosy logic games you will probably enjoy Röki!
