Depots are dirt cheap in the grand scheme of things, for your convenience, I would just build one, even if you do not expect to use it forever.
ok thanks for the info, im surprised there isnt one tbh, early game i find the trains just cant make money with the slow speeds, so was waiting till a fast one comes out.
All trains can make a profit, even the slowest and oldest ones, it is just a matter of finding and setting up a proper route with a decent amount of cargo transported.
Faster trains have higher maintenance fees, so they will require longer and faster lines to break even.

As Tsubame indicated, you can make a good profit on any train in the right circumstances, even in most circumstances. The first couple of runs with a passenger train might not make money, but if you setup the stations "correctly" and wait for a few more passengers then they very quickly become very profitable. Cargo trains are also relatively easy to generate good profits. What mode are you playing on? Easy, Medium or Hard?
If you outline some of your issues I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions as to how to make them profitable.
Cheers,
Chris.
