A simple resource management game mixed with tower defense.

You gather resources to build up your army while waves of enemies respawn towards you.
The goal is to defend your egg, which can be evolved into a giant dragon. If you lose your dragon then it's game over.
With upgrades and useful items that can help you, the game turns out to be very balanced (also, there are several game difficulties and challenges).

The game itself is so much fun and has potential for much more but it's very pleasant.

I see what they were trying to do but it just fails so hard to be anything resembling the game we all know and love. I finished in just 3 hours and it felt nothing like the original. If this game is free, cool... but do yourself a favor and don't spend any money on it.

Woodwarf 1 is free to play on Armor Games and is a fun resource management / castle defense game.

TL;DR Go play that, if you like that then get this on sale.


I like that this version has militant dwarves defending the dragon whelp instead of just upgrading the dragon whelp. But it's offloaded the House/castle upgrade to a meta system outside of the 'gameplay'. Which makes sense for a more campaign style of game but it I miss that from the original. I'd rather the meta system change what level your hut started at each level and still gave you the option of leveling up house, trees, environment, units etc.

I really liked the clear balance of food production and wood (which is gold). This version has veggies and fish...but I'm not sure if its all being fed to the dragon or if theres any difference between the 2.

Castle Defense is a sub genre or variant to tower defense where you send waves of units to clash in the middle and usually each side has a castle with a ranged unit safely shooting enemies that get close. In this castle defense variant however your units don't charge until death, they just move to some spot and wait to die I mean fight. You can move the dragon back and forth, but want to move that mage up so its helping the warrior? Too bad you can't move any of the other units. It makes sense to auto walk units when your goal is to defeat a castle/imaginarygoal and each unit walks forward fighting everything in its path. But in this case they just sort fill in with archers scattered in the back with mages and warriors up front.

I hope this is a game the developer continues to work on and upgrade.

I played the first part for days, even weeks - for free !

Now i bought Castle Woodwarf 2 and completed the game with all achievments (except the hidden ones for playing the endless mode for 90 minutes, which is only boring at all) in less than 3 hours without any difficulties !!!

I expected a well balanced game and i am really disapointed.

This game is worth the money, it's a cool game to waste some time on.
The levels are fun but i started having most fun when I reached endless mode.

The Dwarfen City of Woodwarf and its dragon egg are under attack from The Black Knight and his evil minions. Selecting to Play on the main menu screen will be taken to the World Map. Here you will find Upgrade, Shop, Settings and Help, A Big Red X and your starting point, Durn Uluhm. Selecting Durn Uluhm will then give you the choice of the game's difficulty (Easy, Normal and Hard) along with choice to play the Campaign and Challenge modes. Challenge mode is only available once you have completed the campaign on that level. You can change the games difficulty at any time should you be struggling to get past a level.

Selecting the Campaign will display some information on the current level. Durn Uluhm have Green Slimes which have flooded the caverns below your village. There is also some information on the enemy which is revealed when you hoover your cursor over the enemies which are indicated in the centre of the screen. This information about the oncoming enemy consists of Health Points, Strength and Speed. Paying attention to which enemy are incoming can help you decide on the types of dwarves you use to protect Woodward and its dragon egg. When you are ready to proceed clicking on Campaign will then take you to the game screen.

On the game screen you will have some help so that you get the gist of how the game plays out. The screen is divided into two sections, you have the Underground Caverns and the Surface. On the top of the screen is a bearded dwarfs face, at the side of this is a row of carrots and fish. Just below the rows of carrots and fish it details how many dwarves you currently have on screen and how much gold you currently have.

On the surface there’s a small home base on the left, a body of water is on the right side where you’ll do some fishing and in between is where you’ll grow your resources like carrots, various trees and other foods. You will be required to farm for resources so that you can sustain the dwarves which will battle underground protecting Woodwarf and the dragon egg which is in front of the entrance to Woodwarf.

The entrance and dragon egg are located on the left hand-side of the screen. The health of Woodwarf is also on the left side and are indicated by hearts. The dragon egg also has a health bar above it, should either of these two reaches zero then the game is lost. You will also lose the game if you run out of resources and are unable to feed your dwarves, so keep an eye on the resources at the side of the bearded dwarf face. On the right hand-side is where the enemy will appear in the underground cavern. Near where the enemy appear are details on how many waves the currently level has and how many enemies are left in the current wave.

To collect resources, you will need to assign a dwarf to collect and farm for them. There are three types of dwarves which you can choose from to do these tasks. These are Gathers, Lumberjacks and Fisher dwarves, each of these dwarves cost five, six and seven gold. Gathers will run back n forth collecting resources and delivering them to the home base. Once they have been delivered to the tent/hut you’ll gain some gold which can then be used to add more dwarves, upgrade the growth rate of the resources. Gold can also be used to upgrade your dragon egg into a fully-fledged dragon which you can move left and right across the screen breathing fire, helping to protect Woodwarf.

Now you’ve got some resources coming in you will need to add some dwarves to protect the underground cavern. There are three types of dwarves which you can use to fight against the onslaught of the Black Knight’s minions. The dwarves tasked with defending Woodwarf are Tank, Archer and Mage which cost eight, twelve and fifteen gold each. To begin with you only have a total of ten dwarves which you can call upon. This is a total amount for both those collecting resources and those in combat so you must strike a balance between both. It’s no good collecting loads of resources if you’re failing to protect the caverns and vice versus, if you don’t have enough resources to feed your dwarves then you’re only going to fail in the caverns.

After successfully completing a level you’ll be rewarded with one to three Stars depending on how well you’ve done. You can use these Stars to upgrade your home base, field maintenance, dragon, dwarves and resources. Each of these categories consists of six levels which you can use to help you as you progress through the levels. You will also earn some Gems upon completing a level. These can be used in the Shop where you can use them to buy various special abilities such as, Bomb, Freeze Potions, Gold and Hearts which may just help you in while in combat. You can also buy various new resources like Strawberries, Eggplant, Pine and Maple trees, Trout, Redfish and Tuna. Unlocking new resources will help maintain your growing dwarfen army.

There are fifteen levels to complete in campaign mode, completing campaign in normal mode on each level will then unlock Challenge. Completing all fifteen levels will also unlock the Endless Mode where you will need to combat waves of enemies until you fail. After which you will unlock the last level which is where all the dwarves take a break from fighting now that you’ve delivered peace and go for some peaceful fishing.

In the settings there’s options for Music and Sounds with volume sliders, Windowed, Start Over (you can reset the game wiping any previous game played) and Quit.

The game looks good and it plays well, it’s not very hard to learn but it can become a little frustrating later in the game, but who don’t like a little bit of a challenge. There are only fifteen levels in the campaign so it’s quite short, I would have like some more levels. However, I have enjoyed playing Castle Woodward 2.

I liked the first (free game) - it was simple but fun. Based on that, I decided to buy this version. However, I am having technical problems with this version. It started on level 2 - a giant black rectangle blocks most of the screen. Sometimes the rectangle takes about 75% of the screen. The size of the rectangle varies. I can't even buy new workers and hatched the dragon.

I have an older system: Intel 2600k processor with an Nvidia 970 GPU. I suppose it could be drivers or something along those lines. This is the only game I'm having problems with at the moment.

I hate saying "no I don't recommend" the game as I think I'd like it if I could actually play it. I believe the developers will likely address the issue if they know about. Hoping they can fix this at some point.

While this game still needs some development, it's fairly entertaining, and the developer has gone out of his way to address any and all major problems/bugs that have arisen.

There's definitely some work left to be done -- such as the sizing of the screen -- but overall, it's coming along very nicely and is worth the purchase, especially given the price. If you just want something to keep you entertained for awhile without having to spend $30+, and you enjoy strategy games (I recommend playing the original Castle Woodwarf at Kongregate for free to get an idea of how this is), then this is definitely a worthwhile purchase!

Very short but nice game. Lacks of variety but good for a coffee break.
Really needs WASD instead of arrow keys. For right handed people it's difficult to handle the dragon and the mouse at the same time.
Some more differend dwarfs would be nice and please give the option back, to upgrade the dwarfs hall ingame, like at the first game.
Got the game on sale. Sadly I don't think it's worth 6€. If you liked the first game, this may be worth a look.

Castle Woodwarf 2 is simplified tower defense game with little addon of time management. You have two tasks: first you need to place your workers to cut trees, gather wood (which gives coins) and catch fishes. Second and little more interesting is to summon your warriors (there are few types of them but I still don't understand the difference between crossbowman and archers - in my opinion there is none) to protect you from waves of enemies. Except that you also may use your dragon which is some kind of super unit.
Generally game is very simplified, it looks like mobile game rather than PC and probably it has mobile roots.
But the most important question is: is this a good game? To be honest no, it's not very bad, but it's not good enough to waste your time on it. I played it only because it has dwarves in the title, but to be honest it doesn't feel like a game about dwarves. You don't feel this dwarven vibe at all.

VERDICT:
If you're tower defense fan, this is just too simplified to give you good fun.
If you're dwarves fan as I'am, you will be dissapointed - you won't feel that you command clan of dwarves.
But if you like casual games with some lite strategy element - you may try it, maybe you will like it. but probably the best experience would be on mobile.
