"New" gear system

OK TL;DR I took about 1.5 years away from NW, but am back into it. All my old gear that I used (625) is garbage because now the top is 700...

What's the best way to go about getting new gear?

All the dungeons seem to only drop 625 at the highest, same of the Trials bosses. I went on a couple WTs and got a few pieces of gear that's closer to 700 but nothing I could really use (odd perk mixtures, stuff I don't see using..)

Likewise, what's the deal with Umbral shards and Gypsum Orbs.... Are these made useless, now? I have hundreds of thousands of umbral shards saved up, several hundred orbs...

right now the only way to use 700 gear is paying for it. But id wait on doing that because the next DLC wlll go up to 725 and make your 700 gear useless, so skip this DLC and buy the next one to be max gear score. I know it sounds silly but the skill in this game is navigating the DLC level limits and not actually playing the game.

if i remember right you should be able to convert all the umbral shards into cash also you can craft level 700 gear as replica from the gypsum forge if you had some dungeon loot or get them from the season pass also upgrading heart gem to 700 will help also some named items can get upgraded to 700 dont forget to look for magnitude based jewelry and gear.
wont hurt to read some game update notes from the past because was a long time ago but some changes were reverted meanwhile.

OK, but what's the best way to get higher GS gear? Still having issues finding higher end usable items.

Mutations give a bunch and portal caches (Myrk Guard). I think you need 650 for m1 and 675 for m2 695 for m3. The loot tables aren't accurate as they can drop a bunch of yellow gear with a GS up to 700. And artifacts aren't shown on them. (Dynasty drops The Butcher, Ennead drops The Wall) If you can find a portal mob for Myrk guard you can get the elite chests and caches without needing a higher gear score.

That's the last one too, you can equip one armor lvl 700 artifact, and two weapons, etc. So try to get those. The abyss drops from tier 5 corruption portals and the wizard hat. Several more drop from the mini bosses in elysian wilds. The Elysian wild quest line gives one at the end.

Also they're some higher GS stuff for dirt cheap on the trading post. With so few players stuff ain't really selling like it used to

Back in the days (S2), you could power level your battlepass in few days, and than you could craft a full starter 700 gear (5x body parts, 3x accessories and 2x weapons) with your desired weight/perks from the available pool of items at the kiln.

Nowadays you can do that the same, but you get less materia from battlepass, and it requires more xp to power level it. You can also supplement your starting gear with cheap 700 epic 2x perkers from the market.

Well, if you buy the current DLC, you get the new one free. So there is not really a reason to wait if he intends on buying the new one.

Battle Pass, Season Pass and their variants are the worst thing to happen to games since subscriptions.

Players complained BP leveling was too easy and demanded more of a challenge. So they made it more time consuming to appease the serial complainers.
