So what is Aeternum?

I haven't played NW in quite a while but I was pretty confused by the Aeternum announcement. What is actually being changed/done? I tried looking into it but I couldn't find a good answer.
Will I need a new game copy or will I just get access to the game? What is being changed that is so significant that the game dev feels the need to do a massive wipe?
