btw Im speaking as someone who hit level cap way before they upped the grind, had I not it would have been more than likely wouldn't have bothered to reach it.
This game was extremely hyped and due to its novelty it was widely popular at the beginning. But people that just play what the flow does (the avarage user, that just play whatever new and fun is out) don´t stick, since they seek the flow of novelty.
This game is the most expenssive game ever created, with a budget above 800m euro.
It was originally supposed to be a Survival PVP Wtih multiplayer, but due to complications and many people disliking it, they changed course (while still keeping the foundation) and instead they made a themepark oriented Action MMO.
Is it good? that is subjective. Is it a mmorpg? no. Its an Action MMO, if you like to just pew pew and grind, while doing PvP, this game is actually decent if you ask me (again... subjective)
Other mmo´s do a lot better and if you look at the mmoRPG market, then this action mmo is far far behind, even with games that have been out for ages.. A game like ES:O still have over a million concurrent (if we factor in their own platform, where the vast majority play from) but even on steam (where it was released much later) it is higher concurrents than this game, even after so many years.
Here you can see the progress of New World

Games normally "settle in" after 3 months. That is where you see the "interested" people outside the novelty players, after 6 months, you see the loyal playerbase.
It is rather clear, what most people think about this game, if you analyse the data.
I still see this game going F2P in the near future, it is the only way to get more people in (with a healthy concurrent) while being able to use the cash shops even more.
So I guess it really depends on what you want or look for.. You could research a bit more about the game (I know you got it, but others might have the same question) basically it all depends on subjective bias..
I played the beta´s (even tried the alpha, but that was different) and the last beta made it clear to me, that it was not a good deal for me..
I hope those that do still play it have fun.. after all, that is the most important.
At launch NW actually had about the same level of content as WOW if not slightly more. In fact WOW had so little to do at 60 they made a few nearly unbeatable (all of them nerfed heavily as thery became dated) 40 man raids to occupy time. And many of said raids were so over the top only 1% of the player base ever got to enjoy them before they were old news. And this was of course a winning formula by separating the bads and keeping them out of the main path to progress. That way bads and peasants could only complain to like minded peasants thereby not ruining the experience of the beloved raiders and wealth class who got to troll, farm and torment the weak for more fun and bigger rewards.
It was quite the undertaking but the player base seemed to love 20 min corpse after a week of farming for pots to do runs with never ending drama over DKP for limited WEEKLY loot. And let's not forget the good ole days when all new games had great bug free dungeons, vast raid options available, battlegrounds, arenas and multiple expansions right out the gate.. And yet all this bundled with some glorious 2D graphics for a mere $200 a year plus the cost of RMT gold for those who had actual jobs. At least for those lacking many hours needed to to farm enough mats and gold for repairs if they wanted a chance in hell at raiding.
But LOST ARC is doing great many will say? Yeah for the whales who can afford to pay for actual progress. The rest are just following rich players like AsmonG around carrying their golf clubs hoping to get offered a free donut now and again. I myself sure feel stupid for not exploiting these people who feel great importance by sucking up to online influencers in video games. The truth is the influencers will keep games alive that are MOST profitable to them. It does not even matter if the game is pure dung. They will enter a game and have resources along with vast advice available to them the average gamer will never have even with the many late game tutorials. Fans will farm for them and give up real cash or whatever is needed to prop them up and keep them in their new and greatest FOTM game.
But from a gameplay perspective it's pretty bad. No because it was no fun to play New World, but because it is no fun to play New World over a longer period of time. The initial impression and return impressions of people tend to be positive. And then they notice this is a pointless grind watch the numbers grow simulator without any motivational system behind it. I could spend the entire day playing NW like a job to finally get x in y amount of weeks, but I have zero motivation to do it because finally getting x does not reward me with anything worthwile.
Another reason why numbers are constantly getting lower to near death of a game scenario ranges is the total loss of hope and faith players are experiencing. This game launched in a very barebones state. People hated it and left. Now, to fix this it would require a lot of passion and money from the Amazon development team to quickly implement dramatic changes. And I'm talking really big stuff. But instead they take forever to make small changes that don't really change the way the game feels on a more than superficial level. No one has addressed the boredom, pointless grind, world space or terrible engine flaws yet.
And well, I myself think this lack of faith is completely warranted. They hyped the game up, sold as many copies as possible to make up for its development costs, and now just keep it at minimum support with probably way too few staff members to work on large projects. So we're getting low effort, low quality pvp updates instead because that's easier and cheaper to make than let's say a new area or revamping the gearscore or crafting systems.
Here we are an entire year after the first close beta testing, and the game is still pretty much the same as it was back then. Minus a few annoyances in storage and trading, plus a lot of additional grind but for the same things. Game just feels so... abandonned. They only talk big in their dev podcasts but don't actually do anything. For an entire year man.
Not an argument.
Wow was launched 17 years ago. Did the video games industry stagnated during all this time ? Looking at NW, it seems too.
Sarcasm aside, no, NW didn't reach a good amount of valuable content at release.
Not talking about time-consuming activities like lifeskills (which were mostly useless until VERY late game). But actual content.
Less than 10 dungeon (which are good but a chore to just get in). Some "elite" area and "dynamic" events (rifts) with hardest ones not doable (main quest/item bugged).
PvP was inexistant in open, Outpost so bugged they were disabled and war locked to large guild (if not completely dead because one-sided), a lagfest and cheesable (night time raid, small company bad calculation).
That is (was?) awful when you started to look at it.
Let say you're thirsty and you are offered two glasses of water.
One is offering you clearly clean purified water. Another is offering you clearly dirty, soiled, literally full of excrement water.
Will you take the commonsense choice of no 1?
Or will you take choice no2 because the shill/fanboi says to 'try it', 'judge it for yourself' 'dont' listed to hAt3Rs', 'dont mind the taste/smell', 'experience the fecal/excrement' yourself' before you judge?
The thing is not that the game is trying to be everything for everyone at all....
The thing is that the game is trying to be everything for nobody at all.... nobody wants the game mechanics they keep shovelling out the door. Nobody wants the core game concepts they insist on. Nobody wants this garbage. But they just keep on compounding their design fails with this train wreck. I have seen so many suggestions from players on what could be done to turn things around but they insist on ignoring those and running with their totally clueless philosophy - whatever that happens to be. The level of stupidity required to drive off 99% of your playerbase is truly mind boggling. The arrogance required to do this. I am actually impressed. A concentrated deliberate course of sabotage of the game by all developers and designers could not have achieved a more stunning result. Wow.... just wow.... It's actually bizarre that they could maintain such a flawless track record of failure. Surely even by accident something should have been kind of OK? Surely... But it seems not. Awesome.
Lets be blunt here. With ~1% of the playerbase left now, if they shut the servers it would result in less player loss than any of the other garbage that they sent live. That's just an incredible statement and all the more so because it's not even sarcasm.
