How does the dye system work?

I've made an outfit and unlocked the transmog for each piece. Now, when I dye it does it stay that way? Or do I have to manually re-apply a new dye each time I transmog/upgrade my gear?

i belive you have to dye it every time. maybe im wrong, but the little time i spent transmoging i belive it just the skins, not the dyes

Question ♥♥♥♥♥♥ me curious and I tried it out: The dye stays on your transmorg even after you changed your top and put the skin back on. I tried it out on one of my characters: Default color of the transmorg piece is gold, mine is light grey with Marauder green secondary and that's what I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ after buying another chest armor.

Side note: When you dye mount armor, the dye remains on that mount for that character only, despite the mount being account wide. You can color several mounts too.
