So you have a problem with people in California writing stories for video games. I think anyone with a brain knows why the tech industry started in California and not West Virginia or why it didn't move to somewhere like Arkansas. Imagine if video game stories were written by Missourians `instead of Californians. And yet 'I'd wager you don't have the same problem with the bible being re-written by a queer king named James. In fact one of the most popular bibles read by many anti-gay zealots is very ironic. If you don't like stories written by Californians you are free to not play the game or you can even create your own game and write your own story.
The tech industry may have started in California, but it's not staying there. It's interesting that you made a point to name a few of the states that Californians with the means to escape the state are fleeing to, now that Cali has become uninhabitable for any sane person.
As for the Bible, anyone still following KJV is very out of date, as it lacks a very large number of manuscripts that make up the canon. I'm more partial to ESV these days, but your laser focus on KJV is curious, indeed. I understand that you are frustrated, but you needn't take out your frustrations on me or anyone else. Perhaps some inner reflection and prayer is in order. I wish you luck.
The point is, and I agree with the OP there, that there isn't really any sort of diversity in the game. That cheapens the stories for those of us who care about the stories.
Meet a white male NPC in a position of power and you can bet that he's either:
Corrupt, powerhungry and/or greedy or he's pathetic and whiney. Males that are PoC are slightly better off but not by much.
Monarch's Bluff/Prydwen and Windsward/Corinth are good examples of this.
As for Grainne ni Mháille (Grace O'Malley): It would have been relatively easy to have second NPC, for example a Jack Sparrow like male pirate. You would only be able to rescue one of them though, the other one gets overwhelmed by the mobs and returns as corrupted.
This would have given player's a choice who they want to rescue and it wouldn't even require much work. Most of the dialog would be the same apart from references to his/her gender.
Edit: Before anyone claims I just don't like strong women ... that's not the case. But I hate it when men get intentionally portrayed as weak or evil in order to make women look strong. Modern writers seem to have forgotten how to write a strong female character without sidelining men.
Name a gaming studio or big tech company from California that moved to any of those states. I will wait..
Prove me wrong; am waiting but not holding my breath.
This game could have learned a lot from that game, had they played it. And those devs actually said they were fans of ESO, other MMOs but wanted to take things into a Scandinavian purgatory world.
Oracle, Amazon, and a few other corps are moving (or have moved?) to Nashville. SpaceX, Tesla, and Twitter/X will be in Austin. For some reason, Salt Lake City and St. Louis are becoming big cloud hosting locations. Walmart/Sam's Club's entire IT/eCommerce departments were relocated to Arkansas and made every employee in those departments relocate as well. Based on Intel's recent layoffs, I imagine they aren't far behind.
That being said, all of these relocations, the severe slowing down of CA-based venture capitalism, and/or the avoidance of starting up companies in CA aren't exclusively due to the massive culture shift that has happened in the state over the past few decades, but the state's heavy regulations, tax codes, real estate prices, and the cost of living have made it a strategically bad idea to operate out of California, especially with remote work being acceptable. Politics is downstream from culture; however, and some people (Elon Musk in particular) have outright stated that the culture is playing a role in the exodus.
You're absolutely right. A lot of the big gaming corps got their starts with humble beginnings with small teams of enthusiasts. Daggerfall and Morrowind were made by some nerds in a small studio that were playing some hybrid tabletop game combining Vampire the Masquerade and Dungeons and Dragons. Diablo and Diablo 2 were also made by a small team of passionate gamers. Assassin's Creed, etc. It's almost as if once the companies got big enough to need a Human Resources department, their quality began to diminish, and once big money put a laser focus on gaming, it got even worse. You can even see this in team photographs comparing the teams then and now. It's like the joy and mental health have been sucked out of them.
