How important are the roles in this game and is tanking worth it or shall i just go dps?

Play what you like. You can always swap out weapons and learn new skills. Tanking is always worth it. Heals is a pain in the ass in this game and no fun to level up. None at all. Or you can just use the tank skills that are more dps oriented for leveling, swap them out for defense down the road. Game is pretty nice that way. S/S, hammer/GS just have fun.

I'll definitely play what i fancy, I've always gone tank in other mmos and really enjoy being the 'leader' of dungeon content. I was more curious how it works in New World and is it needed or do the dungeons just become a dps race and the tank struggles to hold aggro.

Tank is pretty good if you gear for it. The carnelean gem is your friend but you can swap out weapons for just running around and not draw aggro any more than anyone else. If you are a good tank in other games you will be good here too, and lord knows many are called but few are chosen...
