This is the only DLC so far. You want it because without it you will be capped at level 60 (max is 65), won't be able to use the flail weapon, nor ride a mount. Plus other stuff (some crafting etc.)
Swimming is in. I have not encountered any game-breaking bugs since i returned (with Aeternum release). Balance is another matter, but im not an expert (if you believe this forum *every* weapon is overpowered if it was used by the guy that killed you :P)
There will be a seasonal server coming in January that forces PvP flag on for everyone all the time. Might be like the good old Frontiers. We'll see.
By far and in any MMO I've tried to this day, DAoC had the best PvP system (Realm vs Realm) system. Conquering frontier walls and forts with consequences also. That's why I got into New World originally, because of Guild controlled regions, borked in game back during the release though sadly, not sure about the current state of it.
In DAoC we had so much in RvR, like hours and hours of fighting on the frontier trying to gain control of borders/walls/forts, or doing those near frontier zone PvP Gank Trains where lot of players of the same realm were just auto-following each other and killing every unaware enemy Realm player they could find, try to hunt in that zone like that :P Hmm, there was a sequel (kinda DAoC2) in progerss, was it Camelot Unchained. How is it doing, last I read about it it was plagued by delays and such... But, have to check :)
Btw, I was in DAoC beta back before the release, actually grouped a lot with the main top dev and author, Mark Jacobs during the beta. He was a cool guy back then... Now I hear different stories about him in the Camelot Unchained related context/stories... I have good memories about him :)
Asheron's Call was fun also in 1999, it had actually a player vs player COLLISION detection for PvP enabled players. Not many MMOs have done that at all, even to this day. PvP flagged players could not overlap, meaning they couldn't get through other PvP enabled players. You could build player flesh-walls and other funky formations blocking access to areas etc. I think this feature was somewhat used also on the famous Thisledown Shard event where players delayed an important story related event with their effort. Eventually caused the Developer to force it to end somehow because the story was frozen for quite a long time :P Novel idea from people it was :)
I've seen no player collision detection much in these MMOs since then. It's a computational operation, a heavy hard and resource hungry of such. Detecting if multiple player controlled (read randomly moving basically) objects (other players) intersect or collide/overlap. Figure that out :) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collision_detection)
But DaoC, nothing beats RvR which existed in DaOC, sadly PvE raids in atlantis DLC killed RvR mostly at least on my servers. People just farmed for raid items all the time....
Like, this is OUR land and OUR keeps and OUR relics and you are invading/stealing it. Even if hibs captured an alb keep, it was still an occupied alb keep, and not a hib one, and this sense of patriotism was what was driving the alb force to recapture it.
Here, territory ownership changes like underwear. Nothing in Monarch's Bluffs screams THIS IS COVENANT TERRITORY and i will fight you tooth and nails to kick you out, dirty marauder. You took it? FIne, we'll take your Weavers' fen or whatever. Kinda a letdown for a DAoC veteran. No "home turf".
I hope someday the devs realize this and re-do the territory ownership mechanics. Once can dream :)
How is the guild PvP and taking control of fortresses/castles and land regions these days. I expected a lot for it by the launch but....
During the launch guild PvP was basically totally broken/borked/bad. Every server I checked for there was basically always one single guild dominating and owning 70-90% of the land regions taking taxes etc thus gaining resources even faster as the domination grew up.
And fortress battles attack/defending in Guild PvP was also broken and being exploited every time all the time...
DaOC had a really good RvR system in <3 None has beaten that so far IMO.
