The word goes to way back thousands of years.
Maybe, but it's still a valid point. Azoth was a real idea in the alchemy world, sometimes given to Mercury by ancient alchemists.
Still, it does sound vaguely similar to Azeroth, even though that wasn't the intent at all, as far as I can discern.
You with your facts and history! Don't you know everything evolves around WOW, the world didn't exist before WOW?!
I recall an old Multi User Dungeon (MUD) called Imperium that was set in ancient Rome. It used Azoth as the solvent for alchemy, this was many years ago but I am sure WOW copied it because that is the only way an idea can be formed through theft of ideas.
It seems one or two letters is all the substitute you need for imagination - where a certain something is 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 something else, but with much less risk of litigation for copyright infringement.

You are right games often re brand/rename materials or at least use the same thing, such as gold as a currency. It doesn't mean they are trying to reference other games, unless of course they are but they usually go to great lengths to make it so people know that.
Dwarves?
Elves?
Melee?
Ranged attacks?
The list goes on.... but you choose to get bent out of shape because Azoth is slightly similar to Azeroth. WTF is wrong with you?
