housing, trophy, and max bonus

ok so im absolutly confused, i hear various ppl/wiki saying 3 trophy buff max at the same time and you need 1 in each house to have these buff (meaning need 3 house)
BUT after having my house i got 5 slot for trophy O.o not 1 ...
does that mean that i have to somehow manually activate 1 of those 5 trophy ?
or
do these 5 trophy activate once placed in my house ?
thats so confusing ,,,

The house I got said I can place 4 chests but it only let me place 3.

you can only have 1 of each trophy in a house and upto 5 trophies in each different house. so you put 3 mining trophies out , 1 in each house and they stack
