A game going free to play has to have an alternative business model to generate revenue. Often that comes in the form of micro transactions that either employ pay for convenience or pay to win elements that heavily attempt to influence players to purchase. Secondarily as well, this can include Appeal to Ego mtx such as decorations, various mounts, skins etc which to an extent, that already exists in game currently in some forms but not all listed just now.
Quite frankly, the likelihood that they'll switch to a f2p model any time soon is pretty small to none. They can kite things as they are for a few more years at least before they'd either decide to scuttle the ship so to speak or consider wringing the last droplets of revenue from it with a f2p conversion to kite for a year or two more after that.
