Try out stuff, I used spear, bow, rapier, musket, GS and Sword/Shield before realizing how great Great Axe is. But for dealing dmg, GS is S tier.
Great Sword
Hammer has one primary attribute. Greatsword has two primary attributes.
It's not even comparable. AGS made GS overpowered and they know it.
Damage type wise Greatswords slash damage has a bonus against angry earth and fares great in genesis obviously. DPShammer is great against ancients without having to change element freeing up the gem slot.
Then there is the possibility to support your main weapon with the Sup-hammer with its rend, weaken and lifesteal but not use it as the main dps option but this has more relevance for a combination with the GA with its long CDs and lack of rend.
And then there is the issue of incompatible attributes. If you want to dps with hammer you go pure str (as with GA) even so far as to go up to 400/500 str with lesser const. Meanwhile
the Greatsword likes its dex too and thus plays better with Longsword and Hatchet secondaries and going for 300/100/100 or 300/50/150 on Str/dex/cons.
Take this with a grain of salt since this is just my personal opinion and...whatever - what do I know, eh. Maybe i really dont have a clue.
EDIT: pretty much Spear, GS, GA, GH, hatchet and even longsword (my dirty little secret) are great dps options and dont worry so much with guides and tutorial vids man. take your time.
As soon as you get to lvl 60 you can level weapons solo in Scorpio in a matter of hours to mastery 20. This really unlocks the power of the different weapons and gives them their unique combat flow
GS Charged heavies with interwoven relentless+crosscut and a third skill of choice
WH Charged heavies with armor breaker (the rend is great for increasing teamwide dps aswell) and the fortify on wrecking ball.
Spears Skewer+dodge into perforate+dodge into sweep+dodge into 2 autoattack then repeat. Not only making you very hard to hit but also applying a 25-40% weaken on the target, a 30-50% fortify on you and devastating bleeds from sweep and skewer. and knocking down targets every 8ish seconds. Ridiculously tanky.
Hatchet gets to just mindlessly light attack which is fun too.
Longsword has ridiculous burst with the option of up to 7 damage perks (round shield) and the insane leaping strike perk that lets you deal 30% more damage to targets slowed by it - it also gives your team 10% more damage which is nice too esp in invasions when you are pure melee and dont have anything to do. (keep in mind that you cant slow most bosses making you loose about 40% of your damage so have a secondary ready)
sorry for the wall of text
