Bow or Musket?
I'm a long time bow user in RPGs. I always play with a bow. So I started out this game with using a bow and I have a rapier.

I'm not sure if I'm happy or not about that. I can't seem to find any better bows, not sure if crafting is worth it.

So does most players prefer bow or musket for choice of ranged weapon?

Why don't you try both ? Just buy the cheapest around and try them out.

Bow has higher paper damage but less range and greater falloff. Bow also requires you to hold right and left click... which is a problem for some gaming mice.

Musket is hitscan too, but both options are just "alright". Youre better off buying cheapish upgrades to your bow, too.

I already have several muskets in my storage shed. Just have to make ammo. I'll try that, thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks. The functionality of the bow is fine, easy to use. I just am disappointed that I am not doing enough damage, yet. I think maybe a better bow would help, but so far if I quest or loot, I get muskets or staffs every single time. Then if they''re not bind on pickup I sell them, otherwise salvage them. I've been gaming for about 14 years and I have just used bow so much, well old habits you know...

Depends bow has more utility And does insane damage, it is well rounded weapon comes with decent AOE too.
Musket if I may be frank is not as good in PVE, traps cannot trap everything and you lose out on damage if you built around trap abilities, the only thing that even helps musket vs PVE is shooter's stance because otherwise your DPS is low due to longer reload speed compared to bow. I mainly use my musket for pvp, I main musket and spear at level 20.
Hope this helps!

Good to hear, I really want to just stick with the bow. I guess I'll stick to it and press on. No doubt I do not have enough skills yet.

Bow

I like the musket and it's good for long distance, but it takes too long to load. So I'm sticking to the bow.

When you say buy upgrades, you mean buy news ones, right? I don't think there is anyway to actually upgrade an existing weapon?

Both have pros and cons. I Musket for hunting in the world but everything else bow. Poison dot and puncture arrow are nice. I really don't like the rest of bow skills. It's between escape which is not great even when you upgrade knockback. Pretty much leaves volley which is pretty solid but slow animation.

Musket has trap and you can leech off it. Then burn and that's about it. All other skills could be nice but takes a lot to pull them off. The only other skill worth taking locks you in place

Lastly bow ammo is easy to craft vs musket. It's not a huge difference but just my 2cents. I've used both a lot. I think musket will need some love at some point

bow damage goes way up as you invest in the skill tree more. My big issue with the musket is getting the ammo, bow ammo is easy to make from the start, not so much for musket.

Can you elaborate on that?
the gaming mouse part, i mean

I started with a bow and added a musket asap as second weapon im usually fine with questing and where i can "abuse" the range advantage im using musket elsewhere and for mobility reasons i use the bow also since im purely dexterity skilled (glasscannon :D ) and the bow only scales with dexterity the output of the bow feels better dmgwise at least on medium to shortrange (dont get into melee ever :P )but for anything else further away im heavily using musket (you can get rid of the dmg falloff with a talent) and the output is INSANE on singletarget. My issue is AoE (im fully poisonarrow specced with the bow so i have smth at least and poison arrow works on singletarget too). In comparison the bow feels MORE versatile and suited for any situation than the musket BUT the musket is just too fun with the scope AND ROCKS on Wars and invasions (you can pick off their backline easily, healers and other ranged players also cannons and repeaters). For dungeons it feels like using an AoE weapon and the bow seems better (i started leveling spear impaler specc fun for PvP aswell LOTS of lockdown too). THE WORST ISSUE with both ranged weapons is the ammo. Crafting ammo is a pain in the ass since every metal requires iron every wood requires green wood eventually and the ouput increase seems not feasible (but it is with better weapon base dmg) for the effort of farming. So i went with steel cartridges and arrows for most of the leveling part. Using both ranged weapons for anything requires you to FARM BIIIIGTIME iron ore, green wood and fibre (arrows are worse usually since i use the bow alot more --> more versatile). I cant even think of using Oricalchum ammo later on since im having a hardtime with starmetal already .... this game has worse ammo issues than WoW (for hunters) once did. Also early game carrying 2 stacks for each weapon (the equipped stacks dont add to your overall weight) burdens you with an extra 100 weight units all the time (later on not that much of an issue anymore but since you will have to carry alot of rawmaterials to craft EVEN MORE ammo it seemed too much too often). As a bottomline i like both weapons and will play both but be aware of the above issues. Good luck have fun !

You can prone and shoot with musket.
