I'd be more focused on what weapons you'd like to use than what role you'd want to fill.
Basically run up and smash with hammer (healing myself) then move to the Gaxe when the mobs hp is low and keep myself healed. Don't know if it's the best solo build but it sure works for me and I have almost no downtime
Axe and Hatchet for the time being. But this will change over time, don't build your character based on what's best, go for what you enjoy. I'm rocking a spear and Musket and having a blast.
This is all for PvE as players are of course smarter and aren't going to rush into a weapons strengths, of course you rarely get a one one one situation occurring so in that scenario it doesn't really matter what weapon you have.
As for what you will find "best" hard to answer but it is pretty easy to get a weapon up to skill level 7 or 8 which will give you the ability to evaluate whether that style of combat fits you or not. So try out different combinations to see what your personal preferences are.
Paladin consists on leveling Focus and Const, using heavy armor and using Life-staff with AOE healing(sacred ground and beacon) plus divine embrace if you need to nuke-heal someone. You can switch off divine embrace for other skills, like Orb of protection for extra tankness.
for the 2nd weapon, you go for hammer with 2 CC skills, (Clear out and Shockwave) and the Mighty gravel for DPS.
you can also be more tanky and go for "templar" build, with sword and shield.
On both cases, you need to get an amber on your hammer or sword for DPS(it makes your weapons scaling to switch over FOCUS), or carnelian for aggro if you wich to tank.
also, note that "paladin" is just a name i came with for this build, i find very enjoyable to play this way.
The best thing about this build is that people will try to kill you in pvp just to find ou that you're not that fragile, and will either give up or waste their time since you can tank 1-2 players with your healings plus heavy armor and create some space with CC with the hammer or sword/shield; It gives you enough time for mates to come in and kill them.
Berserk will get you a health regen, speed increase and make your attacks un-interruptable
read between the lines, the question he asked was obvious.
Wear heavy armor, focus on focus stat, with some con sprinkled in.
Use life staff and hatchet make hatchet scale with focus (gem).
You can solo with ease and bring heals to the table in dungeons/pvp if you end up wanting to do them.
You wont do amazballs dps but you'll be essentially unkillable unless you're doing something silly like pulling too much agro or trying to tackle things too far out of your level/gear score.
For example, in this game, is tottally viable to create an "archer mage". You can modify your bow to scale with int, and use ice-gauntlet as a secondary weapon for more defensive measures with close-quarters combat, doing damage with bow and ice gauntlet is awesome. Is basically where all the fun is for me, making those fun-to-play builds that works because the game is not tied to classes.
