There is a kind of gem you can slot into gear that provides additional threat generation.
Above comment mentioned it, carnelian gem is the one. The smallest gem gives +100% threat generation. The next one gives +200% threat. Not sure about the even better ones.
Also it's best to put it into the second weapon as well if that one has taunts. Like the 2hand axe and warhammer both are good as second tank weapon as they each have a taunt ability as well and crowd control. It's good if the taunt abilities on your sword are on cooldown.
It's not needed. Tanking's second weapon should either be support, or solo DPS. I chose the DBL axe for my second weapon. With as tanky as you are, you just pull entire villages on you, reap, get all your HP back, maelstrom and heavy attack to finish 6-10 enemies at a time. Ever feel threatened? Switch to sword and shield and use defiant stance level 3+the passive heal perk to heal 1k hp at 5k hp max. Reap+defiant is basically "Do I even need a healer?"
Once you have aggro with defiant stance, you don't lose it most the time anyways.
Does this apply in dungeon or whatever is the equivalent of raid content in this game? That's to say, there's no need for healers?
Here's my tanking setup.
Reverse stab level 3.
Shield bash level 1.
Defiant stance level 3.
Healing perk.
You basically do this rotation.
Pull enemies by running to them or have the ranged pull. Use defiant stance. The taunt effect happens and is noticed by the lightning bolts over their health bar. Enemies line up, back up, once backed up, shield bash, immediately follow up with reverse stab. Reverse stab level 3 allows you to get 25% of your sword CD back on a hit, but it is each individual enemy hit, so 4 enemies, 100% CD reduction. Which means, defiant stance can then be cancelled, triggering the heal to proc, resetting your damage reduction and the taunt and allowing you to redo the combo all over again.
If at anytime you mess up and things go on CD, just switch to axe, rotate there and switch back. You will stay topped off almost all the time. It works in Amrine, I've yet to do any of the other dungeons yet and am level 35. In Amrine though, I'd pull 6-10 enemies at a time and the healer barely had to touch me.
It should also be noted I figure all this out because of my detest for healers in this game lol. So many times I've been like "Heal me!" now I'm more or less self sufficient.
Thank you very much for the detailed explanation.
Wouldn't that make healers a redundant class since tanks are self-sufficient? Wouldn't it be better(ie faster) to just bring another dps instead of a healer?
Those are odd numbers I guess you can say one gives twice as much but it doesn't seem like it is telling the whole story. What is the duration of them? If you have a 200% level off a mob does a DPS have to do 200% damage to get its attention? It isn't just taunt a lot of things have that description of if you do this is it this percentage better. For weapons you can figure it out but for something like taunt you don't really know the threat level you have with any enemy so it is hard to judge, other then the 2 is better then 1 logic.
Healers are still needed, mistakes do happen, but they don't have to stick to you so to speak. A tank can push their reduction to numbers like 83%, which helps the healer catch up. However if I have a good pull, I don't need a healer, if that makes any sense at all.
I see, thank you.
My confusion comes from my long experience with wow. In wow, a healer is practically a must unless the tank is overgeared for the dungeon so it's kind of a surprise to hear that healers are not needed as much in dungeons for new world.
Good and bad I guess. Good because at least it will be easier to get a group going even without a healer. Bad because fewer might play healers since the tank is able to handle it quite comfortably and more dps means the faster the enemy will die thus making healing less of a need.
To be fair, I wouldn't go by the lowest dungeon in the game. Also it's the question if he tanked it without needing any heal at level 30 or 35 or if that was on like level 25 max. I very much doubt that on the level 65 endgame dungeons you will be self sufficient as tank in terms of healing. It may work in the lower dungeon, but I doubt it's like that in endgame dungeons.
Well to be fair, in WoW you can easily do low level dungeons without heals as well, you can do them with 5 dps. Ragefire chasm? Done it with like 3 people, no heal, no tank. Low level dungeons aren't a representation of the endgame dungeons.
True, thanks for the reminder.
Not in classic wow, not at least how I remembered it.
In regular wow it is possible because nearly everyone is rocking heirloom gear thus making them well geared for the dungeons.
