How does it compare to Everquest?

I've tried a few MMOs over the years, but the only one that got me was early Everquest.

How does this compare? Is it more WoW than Everquest?

It's nothing like Everquest unfortunately. You level almost exclusively through questing, unlike Everquest, and the combat is based around left click attacking, dodging/blocking, and three skill rotations. The combat is fast(ish) paced and the time to kill is incredibly fast. I was hoping for a Darkfall-lite but this just feels like a cross between Guild Wars 2 and Elderscrolls, both of which are boring as hell in my opinion. There is little need to group with other players, at least in the early game, except for PVPing, which feels kind of pointless at the moment. The PVP might feel better later in the game with the faction wars, but they kind of dropped the ball by removing open world PVP and full loot drops. The PVE is kind of meh and the PVP is pointless (no incentive or reward from doing it).

Everquest is still one of, if not the best, MMORPG out today. Consider playing Project 1999 if you haven't already :)

Imagine stripping away any cool feature of EQ, then simplify skills, progression, combat and remove all lore and variety.

That is pretty much it..

Every recent MMO is more WoW then Everquest except maybe Gorgon.

Far less grind than EQ to level up. A tad too easy for me but still nice. You can level through mob grinding, questing, PvPing and all craft related actions. Also discovering the world helps with leveling.

No tab targeting button smashing like everquest. Positionning yourself in a very very dynamic way is key here. Think of it as Dark Soul like albeit more easy.

Lore is nice and tons of stuff to read through.

My biggest beef Vs EQ is that death is almost meaningless. Of course EQ was hardcore to the bone with rezzing naked, 24h to get your corpse or poof, loss of XP... There its you just respawn at your binding point.

EQ was prolly my best MMO exp (the first is always the best) but Im actually really enjoying NW as its engaging enough and fits way better with my current playtime (Damn becoming an adult sucks).

I will stick with this game

Have you checked out Project: Gorgon on Steam. An indie MMO that reminds me of EQ and AC in so many ways. Has a 'All Reviews' rating of 84%,

It’s a mixture of both probably. If you have not supported I would hold off until the beta is being released.

I actually tried out the private server for Vanguard: SOH recently. Really weird to explore the world again after so many years. Looks like it will be years before they finish the emulation fully but still was great to try it out.
