New World and VPN's
I heard Steam doesn't like it when people use a VPN ... so can I get banned if I use a VPN in-game to reduce ping?

heck no, most people use VPNs for safety,

you can't really get banned.. but how do you think VPN will make you get less ping?

only if you use it to buy games for cheaper. but not using VPN in general.

VPNs increase latency actually unless your ISP likes to throttle your traffic then maybe it might give you more consistent latency. It's not at all a bannable offence

Yes you can get banned. Even if you don´t abuse it to "buy cheap copies of region locked games"

You can read about it in the ToS
That being said, the risk is low, I reckon some would have to report you.

No, actually, ISP throttling does not ... meh
What I know is that when you connect to the game servers your connection goes through a series of nodes on its way to the game servers, your ISP's connection sometimes kinda pick bad nodes and you end up taking unnecessary turns. What the "VPN" does is give you the most straight route through the nodes so you get less ping. If you live, say, literally next to the server it won't work. If your ISP assigns you the most straight route it wont work either.
If anything. it won't increase your latency if the thing works as it should owo. or if its one of these trashy shady free VPNs ..

You do not understand VPNs or the internet.

Yes and no. The common thing that get's overlooked is the secure tunnel between you and the VPN server. That still has to take a route your ISP and the rest of the backbone network have mapped out for it.

However, you will never see this route because of the VPN protocol. You will see the un-encrypted route between the VPN server and the game server. If that happens to be close to the game server, it will look like you have a more "direct" path to the game server.

VPN is mostly for security, and for those cases where internet routing has an issue and you use a VPN to get around the node(s) that are the issue.

Sorta - different ISP's have different partners/tiers for external routing / traversal etc. And those partners will prefer routing over internal infrastructure vs external due to associated costs etc - hence some ISP's have longer routes/hops than others.

So yes, in some cases - a VPN tunnel can reduce the amount of hops and the latency should the VPN provider also have a exit node close to the intended destination.

Reminds me when I had to buy a vpn to play games like WoW or asherons calls, isp at the time throttle or straight banned those connections and they were the only option for the area

stream doesnt like it if people use vpn to change region store to get cheaper price

A pc connects to your home network, with a vpn your network connects your network to the vpn so all everyone sees is the vpn traffic. It adds extra steps which can slow things down.

Steam doesn't care about VPN use unless you use VPN to buy in a different currency then your actual currency.

VPN is not likely to improve performance either btw...
It's more for security than anything else.

I think you may be thinking of region locked games, which can get you in trouble.
As others have mentioned, using VPN to price shop different regions will also get you in trouble.

nah its strictly if you use it to bypass tax laws in your country/state to get cheaper games. they dont care if you use a vpn to play your games or anything

and yea VPNs arent going to give you any kind of advantage unless either your ISP is throttling you or theres an issue with one of the nodes between you and the server
