Why do insects "disappear" when I get a request to catch one?

I'm trying to do the requests from the NPCs every day - but I keep having this problem that they ask for a bug, say a fly or largidae, which I can find loads of usually. However on the specific day they ask for it, it's often impossible to find even a single one. I may spend the entire day just looking for it and often not succeed. What's happening? It's very annoying. I try to keep some bugs in my bag for these days, but it's not always the right ones...

I think it's just a difficulty thing. It's also why many players have turned to storing every fish and bug for these kinds of requests. If you don't want to use the stack fish/bugs in crates mod, you'll have to create a storage area.

Here's mine with building up to 5 of every fish and 6-12 of every bug. Although, I'm only at 3 of the the rare dragonfly.

yes, had it yesterday. on one day i caught about 6 Meadow Katydid right in the middle of town. next day Rayne asks for Meadow Katydid, me thinks, easy peasy ... well, didn't find any, neither in town nor in a quite large circle around & not even with the help of the Bug Book.

Is your bug/fish storage a mod? Or, how do you build it? Thanks in advance!

Vanilla. No mods. You can place bugs and fish down on the ground. I just expanded a spot of land with a dirt printer and then got to laying path, signs and placing bug a and fish. I added the center area because it was very dark in the middle.
