Somewhat similar to Banished, in that early on, you may struggle with basic necessities like food and water, and that you need to cut down and re-plant trees to have building material.
However, in Timberborn, you may easily get 3-4 harvests of the fastest growing crops between droughts, whereas in Banished, you had one window of opportunity for planting crops (Spring) and you had one period for harvest (Autumn/Fall) -- if you missed those, you were out of luck. In Timberborn, you can easily plant carrots just 4-5 days before drought (Droughts are TB's equivalent of "Winter" in Banished), and harvest them.
Furthermore, once you grasp the whole "Building dams" thing, you will be able to become "drought-proof", which is as if in Banished, you could 'disable winter'.
There is no Trader in Timberborn, and your beavers can magically conjure seeds of crops and saplings of trees out of thin air to plant.
With the verticality option for construction, landscaping abilities you have the option of truly massive construction and map remodel in game.
Simcity is just a different planet. I still plan to reinstall it and give it a go again, one of these days. I still miss it, after such a long time... But it is nothing like Timberborn.
as for simcity, that ones not even comparable. simcity is set in the modern era so doesn't even play remotely the same way, doesn't feel similar, they're nothing a like at all as far as I can tell. Timberborn has a more, late medieval feel to it minus all the blood, guts and violence. This game is purely peaceful with the only real roadblock thrown at the player, so far being droughts and occassional (adjustable) injury. Other than this, it's a logistics game.
I can't imagine 2 games so different as these two.
Like banished in that your beavers age quickly and die quickly, so you go through lots of them over a game. (Age in Timberborn is measured in days, and treated like years, so an average beaver will live 50-70 days) Population is (vastly) easier to manage, as young grow up quicker, and do not require school to be productive.
Like Banished in that you need to plan for your seasons (drought instead of winter) and stockpile resources to survive, but drought seasons are not always the same number of days, they can vary wildly, (2 days to 60 days or more, tending to start small and get longer as the game goes on) unlike Banished, where winter is always the same length, give or take a day.
Like Banished in how resources are made, down to using foresters to replant trees and gathers to pick berries.
Like Banished in keeping people healthy and happy is the next priority after survival is met, and so you need to have medical beds, decorations, and entertainment.
Unlike (vanilla) Banished, You then have to manage power sources, water flow and depth mechanics, irrigation of land, and Terraforming. You do not need to deal with spreading illness, tool making, clothes making, buying or selling anything, immigrants, or graveyards.
Unlike Banished, the map is 3D, and buildings can be built on each other, making vertical growth important.
I never played Banished, and it is not like Sim City as others above have mentioned.
The terrain is 'blocky' like some have mentioned about minecraft game that I have never played. Appearance of the terrain in Captain of Industry is much better than this game. I play this one for the gameplay challenge rather than looks anyway.
I keep trying to drag the paths like belts in the other game (COI), and it never works.
