That's the fastest diagnostic, the other is that the bad water blocking blocks are XY axis only, so if badwater flows OVER a block, it will spread to an adjacent block. There may be a location where the water level dips over a blocker periodically.

2. Infection with badwater form ground pollution is impossible for beavers (plants die of course). Either your beavers got infected elsewhere or the stream overflows from time to time and your beavers get wet feet.
3. The behavior in your screenshot is as intended. Pollution spreads 8 blocks inwards, also around corners (imagine walking block by block). You can count it in your screenshot on both sides.
Agree with trixi the FT pump has a depth of 4 (IIRC) and produces 15 per hour for a crew of 3. Incredible output.
