sluice gates allowing water through after auto close
I'm noticing (starting today) that my sluice gates are allowing water through for about 10-20 seconds after it auto closes from water height condition causing water height beyond the gate to surge about 0.5 units. Is this how they work now?

Hi, could you send us your save and log files at logs@mechanistry.com ? It would be the best if the save had the camera where the issue is happening, along with a short description in the email. Here's how to find them: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1062090/discussions/2/3110269213859735252/

Haven't had any issues with sluice gates myself. When they reach the desired water height they instantly just close for me.

Same thing happens to me as OP. I thought it was just how it worked. Setting anything to over 0.6 will cause over flowing.

Think you didn't take flow inertia into account. If you have some flood gates or some other restriction to the flow further downstream, it will cause a wave to travel backwards.
since both the establishment of flow and stopping it goes tile by tile, this will cause the gate to malfunctions.
that in my case has often caused severe flooding, when using sluice gates and auto.

can be avoided by separating water into flow channels and ponds. ponds i set the gates on 0.95 (or whatever) and they don't have a outlet (used for irrigation). because i never have much flow, the don't suffer from wave effects and i have max. reserves fot drought.
flow channels on the other hand, i use for power and water transfer, those i create deeper and slowly establish flow after drought. making sure there are no restrictions which can cause waves to reflect, they achieve very high cms.

you have to take into account, that water cannot properly fall down right now. if you send it to fall down somewhere, where it steps over the edge, flow seems to be restricted as if you have a gate on 0.5? height. so you depending on flow rate, you have to widen the area where it steps down by up to 3 times.

effect also happens, if you have any floodgate downstream set to 1 or above.

Example Screenshot: Water Height 3 on a ledge, but pure air restricts the water.

@grilled.dev_Mechanistry: Would be nice if they faulty water being restricted through air could be fixed.
Suggestions in regard to the new machanics:
1. it would also be nice, if enclosed water doesn't evaporate.
2. create new more expensive waterwheels / pumps, which are sealed so can be used with water under pressure. would also help with the shloshing after droughts.

Example of Irrigation pond (about 100 tiles in area), with the gate at 0.95. since there is only little flow from evaporation, it works and doesn't flood.
