control based on upstream depth would be be nice too.
and lastly: i unfortunately didn't find them better than dams/floodgates when placed at the top of a reservoir, since they are either fully open or fully closed instead of being partially closed like the other two.

Sluices allow you to control based on downstream conditions or badwater, and floodgates allow you to control for upstream conditions.
Seriously the best add though. Badwater control was unautomatable without them, or many, many pumps.
dams and floodgates are great for early game and serve a very clear and good purpose there.
a sluice is just a few tweaks shy of everything you want in the endgame.
(also you can't walk on top of a floodgate, unforgivable.)
I see, so you have a reservoir chamber specifically for running badwater off the map. Gotcha.
