What is "safe mode"?

I just installed the game and started it and I get a choice: Timberborn or Safe Mode.
What is Safe Mode and why would I pick Safe Mode?

Hi, Safe Mode is a backup measure for when your game wouldn't start normally. It resets most settings and disables certain optional things.
