Making a multilevel staircase?

So, I'm building what basically amounts to a block of flats using mirrored lodges (for the sake of keeping this question simple)
My problem comes when I'm putting in stairs: You can't put a platform using stairs as a base, so the footprint of the 'stairwell' seems to expand outward for each level I build.
It could be I was just tired (And stupid) when trying to design my stairwell, but does anyone have any design suggestions to overcome this?

Depending on how tall you're aiming for the best designs I've seen so far are more like a pyramid. Though stacking houses you using any platforms to make the build range difference so you can have spirals around the thing going down?

don't build your stair cases directly adjacent to you homes but instead place them 1 square off the home. that way you can make promenades of flat platforms around your houses and use a single, central staircase to connect all of the levels (picture to follow)

EDIT: the picture I promised; in theory I could extend the staircase on the ground level up indefenitely but you run up against a leisure problem when doing so.

You can put the 2 and 3 tall platforms above staircases. You just can't staircases on top of staircases which is a limitation you can work around, but you could create a 2x3 staircase as tall as you want
