Timberborn
Tips for improving performance later in game?
I've reached a point in my save where my fps drops pretty low alot, any tips for improving performance?

Ye i feel like im getting to that point too, when i zoom out dropping already from 144 to 60fps or lower - but if you keep an eye on the fps you will see it hardly depends on your zoom level. I guess they already have a smart rendering system that only renders whats in your viewport. So basicly dont zoom out to hard on to overcrowded places and it keeps up.
How many beavers do you have? Once I got >500, my FPS drops down to 1 on the highest speed setting, about 15 on the second speed setting. Normal speed and pause is fine.
this makes me hesitate buying this game. Until it runs well i have heard more than one problem with fps even on good systems.

This describes my issue pretty much exactly, appears to be tied to the number of beavers + game speed.

Anno 1800 can slow down late game when you have a HUGE empire but even then it rarely drops below 40fps on my 2600x 1660ti system i will wait and see how this pans out but i love what i am seeing from timberborn

I experienced similar issues in Banished. Once your population got over a certain amount, running on top speed would slow the fps waaaaay down.

so, i am wondering about this myself. my pc is 2 weeks old. Brand new clean i9 2.8ghz with 64gb ram and a rtx 3080ti card. 330-350ish beavers and i chug alot on fast. dynamite is slow to spread at all regardless of number placed.
Increasing the timescale is notorious for it's impact on performance regardless of the game and it gets worse for every AI entity added into the scene. It's why there's always a hard limit be it 3x, 5x, or 10x. There always comes a point where performance will take a huge hit. That's not to say they can't optimize things, just that this problem is common in games with a FastForward button.

I am not sure how much it would help, but if you go to settings you will find that the resolution is automatically set to ultra high. Setting it down to high or even medium improves fps, and the details are still decent. The shadows are less realistic and the colors are less smooth, but if the game becomes more playable then it's likely worth it.
I boosted my 1x speed by dropping down to low graphics, but my population of +750 beavers is pretty CPU intensive ;-;

And I'm running this on an ancient pre i-Core Intel Xeon E5440 OC@3.4GHZ, so I am probably CPU bound heavily. Also water has a high CPU cost it seems, because my spreading of water around the map via dams and levee channels has definitely hit my fps rate.

Also one thing that might be causing issues is it may be using 1 core more heavily than others. Haven't check task manager though while it's running :/

So frankly, until they do some major optimisation passes, unless you have very high single core performance restricting population growth is probably your best bet to maintain high performance on 2x or 3x speeds.
I have a 2070 super with an i9-9900k. I can run Dyson Sphere Program with no problems.

At ~750 beavers the game would stutter at 3x speed

At ~1000 beavers the game would stutter at 2x speed

At ~1500 beavers spread over 15 districts, the game stutters at 1x (normal) speed. This is even with graphics set to low. I'm only using around 2/3 of the map too.

Fun game - but they definitely need to work on some performance optimizations.
Well, pathing calculations aren't computational cheap to do properly, neither is water physics and so the more AI entities you add, the more calculations are needed. Plus water and beavers increase the memory the game needs as well.

What brand new i9 is 2.8GHz? Or did you get a 10th gen? My max beaver count has only gotten to about 320 so far but with my 11900k, 3080ti, and 64GB@3200 I never go below 130fps even on fastest speed. The only stutter I get is when an autosave happens.

only kept maybe 30 or so in any specific district. At least in later games. Some of the earlier ones I had some 70 pop districts. Seeing mentions of such larger numbers? Oof...
AT around 300 total beavers in two districts I noticed the first hiccups, after a bit of tweaking here and there, i discovered, that for me, the biggest performance hit was the rendering of the tree cutting areas, clearing it all, and only marking the currently required cutting areas, gave a noticeable improvement in general smoothness
