Real second districts or work camps?
Am I the only one who only uses extra districts as work camps? Sending logs, water, carrots, and if needed planks / dynamite to the district, building housing but nothing else, and just having them build and remove blockages?
I don't think I've ever built a second district up to actual city status, at most I have 6 beavers in my work camps.

Depends on the map, really. If I can fit everything into one huge stretched out beaver metropolis I definitely prefer that. It's only viable on some maps though. (Waterfalls is great for it)

But usually I have to use satellite camps for things like scrap metal that only house the bare minimum of beavers. If I'm playing Iron Teeth, I'll manually transfer beavers to them. If I'm playing Folktails, I'll keep them at minimal population for whatever task they need to do.

I run the whole spectrum... Ive had districts that I just used for water storage (free big tanks without the construction or R&D cost) or mining camps (food & water in, metal out) and all the way on to full districts that were self sustained.

Mostly I just do mining camps now -- with golems, and no need for housing or food/water etc, it works out. And the free storage was a crutch/exploit, really, but its a lifesaver if you screw up hard mode.

yes. I think we all do this. I eventually turn my work camps into legit districts or they get replaced with golems. Work camp beavers make me feel sad

For maximum well-being, work camps must be eventually replaced. In this mode, I like a self-imposed rule that prohibits use of golems/bots other than for heaviest (most injury-prone) industries (golem parts, golem assembly, mines) or for golem-only things. This way, there is some challenge left that would otherwise be taken away by having bots do everything with zero working hours for beavers.

Yeah i only have work camps / outposts with a few people to extend the building or collection range(scrap metal). I would extend this idea by only sending bots to other districts once available, since they don't care about decoration and food etc.

I do a little of both; but it really depends on what I am doing.

I tend to make the districts self-sufficient for food, wood and water (less than 20 beavers); but have a central "settlement" for industry; making golems and whatnot; but as said above, it really depends on the map and what I am doing.

At the moment, I am experimenting with building all of my settlements over the rivers/lakes; minimizing the things I put on land to roads/flags; and of course those pesky "ground only" buildings (like the temple). Right now I have 160 pops in 5 settlements; the main one with approximately half that number of beavers, a second with about 35, and the rest with between 15 and 25 each.

Very cool, I did that on 1000 islands once.

Thanks! I posted a screenshot or two. I have done it on two different maps thus far (Plains and Lakes) and both times with Ironteeth Clan, since they have that cool lumber storage facility you can put on platforms, not to mention the deep water pumps; which work if there is a lengthy drought.

Short answer yes, longer answer depends on what I want to do with the map. Work Camps can become full districts with all amenities if that's the plan. But i have (often) used 'disposable' Work camps for gathering scrap metal or dam building, sometimes to reach that last levee which is one square too far!

did you know you can just delete and remake district center a little closer, build the last bits high priority, and move it back?

I have made every district into a proper city with as many functions as possible. Three times i have almost built out a map before an update trashed by city, and only rarely did I have some odd corner where the only way to build anything there was to make a tiny district with just a few things just so I could build everything out.

My favorite is a folktails unmanned power district. Find a nice high cliff, built it up with platforms, get your grav batteries and windmills, connect some power lines and then remove the district and ignore it. Might take a crapton of gears and metal but then it's power for everyone with zero maintenance.

Usually just work camps, though I have built atleast one proper second city. Moving the district center is a huge tip though!

Yea, I also use districts as extra camps: a district to produce pine resin and maple syrup; a district or two for extra logs; a district for wheat, potatoes for food/fuel an so on.

I think it depends on how you view the districts. I see them as the beavers' home, and I set it up so that they not only have their physical needs taken care of, but later on, their emotional needs are taken care of as well, so they can see their homes within the districts as places to enjoy as well as live and work.

Tip: It helps to set aside building footprints for things like temples, campfires, rooftop patios, etc. At the beginning, you won't have the resources to spend on them, but later on you will, and it will go a long way in helping your beavers to be happy.
