Timberborn on macOS
Hi everybeaver,

The purpose of this thread is collect all information related to macOS support in Timberborn in one place. If you do not find an answer to your question or something doesn't work, please reply here or start a new discussion with "macOS" in its title.

Does Timberborn support macOS?
YES. Please refer to the game’s minimum requirements for details.

Does Timberborn natively support M1 / Apple Silicon?
YES. Starting December 1, 2021, the game runs in native mode (without Rosetta). This applies to the main branch and the experimental branch.

Does Timberborn support traditional / Intel Apple hardware?
YES.

The game freezes during launch, what should I do?
Some players reported that the game stops during launch. We are working on a permanent fix with Steam and our game engine. In the meantime, after clicking Play to start the game in your Steam client, try to select “Play macOS workaround”. Let us know if it solves your problem.

Using the MacOS workaround the game worked reasonably well on my ~9yo MBP (2.8GHz/16G/Intel Iris Pro) on Monterey OS (12.7.6/21H1320).
I had to scale the graphics in the game to about 140% to make the UI legible (thanks for the scaling feature!).

The only real downside is that I could cook on the laptop while playing game, the fan was roaring trying to cool the laptop down.

I'm running this on a 16" M3 Pro Macbook Pro 12c CPU/18c GPU with 18GB of ram, I still experience frame rate issues (significant drops) once the population reaches around 200.

Seems even windows users are experiencing the same thing, weirdly enough, my cpu doesn't even get maxed out even with that population.

I just wish they'd do something about this, it's what keeping me from playing the game because I have already worked so hard on my town.

If this helps other Mac users, I played almost 400 hours with a relatively modest spec laptop Macbook Air M2 (16GB RAM). This is the best city builder I've ever played on MAC. Period. It really fits the screen size (top notch included).

I was surprised that Timberborn runs so smoothly on Mac since other studios are not able to deliver on Mac, even in 2025! (Anno series, etc).

I normally play with low graphics because I want the laptop to remain cold and save on battery. Low graphics are HIGH graphics quality in this game. Really.

I've noticed that with large populations in large maps and playing 3X speed, gameplay can slow down a bit. Mechanistry could try some further optimizations to improve this.

Oh and battery life, as the battery lasts 2 hours-ish when playing this game. Would be nice to be able to play this game on large plane trips running on battery.

iMac 24" M1 2021, Sonoma 14.7, game installed on internal HD.
The game runs fine, with some hiccups, on its own with Game Mode turned off (and lots of other "new" Mac features that are completely pointless, imo).
Streaming the game is a whole other issue. Massive rendering lag and skipped frames because of it. I really wish the game ran smoother so that it can be streamed on a Mac.
(and don't tell me to have a look at streaming software etc, because I have!)

Hello, I have an M1 iPad which serves as my laptop along side my desktop PC. I would love to be able to play on the go. I wonder if there is the possibility of the game being ported to ios or iPad os. Until then I am walled of by apples refusal to allow mac os on hardware which would support it. All the best!

Anyone having crazy memory usage on experimental? I can't run the game for more than 20 or so minutes before I get the system dialog about needing to quit apps, and Activity Monitor reports the used memory at ~10.4Gb. Map is Beaver's Paradise (it's on the workshop). I'll include a leaks report since that appears to have spotted a couple of those, but nothing that would explain a 10Gb memory usage.

Version is v0.7.8.0-547e472-xsm, running in native ARM mode.

This might be helpful for new players, I am playing Timberborn for the first time. when I launched the game I was given three launch options:
- Play Timberborn
- Play Safe Mode
- Play MacOs workaround

I am new to this so i don't know what do the options mean and which is the best. I have an M4Pro MacBookPro

I'm getting the message that Timberborn needs permission to store saved games and can't get past this screen. The permissions are set up for writing to the drive it is installed on. Steam apps are running on a external drive from the Mini M4 main drive. I've tried giving it full permission and still get the same error. Anyone have other suggestions?

FIXED MY OWN PROBLEM: I went into FINDER and GET INFO on the documents folder. Unlocked the folder (bottom right lock on Get Info Window) and then ran Timberborn. This time it asked permission to write to the documents folder and was able to grant it permission.
