Yeah, it's a little odd that the beavers can't swim. But the game isn't finished yet, so maybe that's a feature they will add.

To add to odd features: they cant drink from the river.
Put the same water into a bucket, now its fine.

I figure thats because the water is cleaned in the pumps

Yeah, it's not explicitly stated, but it's hinted at that the water's polluted since the description of the pump states that it "pumps and filters" the water.
That, and the beavers staunchly avoid coming into contact with the water.

Maybe another bar needs to be introduced such as hygiene or contaimnation and the longer they stay in the water the higher/lower it gets, until either a major stat debuff or possibly death

I think the beavers aren't real beavers and that they are more like human beavers. Huvers? Beaman?

Eh, they really are beavers, though evolved ones (as the game description says (a paraphrase of it) "Humans are long gone..." To me, this means that the beavers have had time to evolve to be able to do some of the things we associate with humans more than beavers (walking on two legs to carry something, for example), but they didn't interbreed with the humans to make weird hybrids.

That might be cool. My hubby and I have talked about how interesting it would be to have a medicine component. It might be nice to have to harvest medicinal herbs/berries, to give the gatherer flag worker(s) something else to do. To expand on it even further, a new building could be added that's a "hospital/care center" where the beavers stay if they are sick, and where they go to get the medicinal herbs. Heck, you could add another building and have it be the apothecary, where a beaver does the work of turning the medicinal herbs into medications (thinking like taking willow bark and making aspirin) which are then transported to the care center.

Having the beavers have a high chance of getting sick while swimming would fit right in with this. And it would encourage the building of platforms over the water still, while also having the beavers be more beaver-like and swim.

Really beavers? A beaver that can produce 50 horsepower? :P It's f. huge beaver ;)

I think it'd be neat to see beavers swimming, perhaps 1/4 the normal speed of walking, or 1/2? (to encourage bridges). Saying they evolved OUT of the ability to swim feels odd. :-/

That makes the most sense... The river likely is contaminated as heck. So spending a certain amount of time would hurt them. They likely evolved quicker due to this fact. Forced to use their brain more to think about ways to get cleaner water. So the "dumber" ones succumbed and after generations the intelligent offsprings where the ones to survive. And eventually they learned how to use tools and decided to build cities to survive where they can filter water and grow food with the filtered water. Survival of the fittest. Once they learned how to make tools they likely found ancient human structures and tools and used those to get inspired into a jumpstart in technological development.

My beavers used unfiltered water only for growing food. They were fine.

Isn't the pollution more of an excuse not to code swimming?
Beavers live in dams and go under water to get in and out of them. Why would they evolve out of that?
Seems a bit disappointing to me. For a beaver, water would be a much faster way of moving than on land, and making highways out of water channels etc would be great.
Thats why beavers make dams, they flood a large area so they can move around quickly and are safer from predators. and they provide shelter. Also the deep water near the dam is used to store wood for the winter, which they literally eat.
An intelligent beaver society could do so much cool stuff.

At the moment you could just replace the beavers with humans and it wouldn't be strange. it's kinda just like banished but with dams.

Why would the humanity evolve out of climbing trees all the time? We still have parks in our cities, right?

Because trees aren't as good as houses?

Edit: What point are you trying to make? Beavers shouldn't swim because humans don't climb anymore? It's a game beavers should swim cos that's fun.
Also they're beavers so screw you
