Valve Deckard Will Not Come Anytime Soon
As a Valve Index guy who got a Quest 3 recently, I love VR. I still love and use both headsets btw. And I really want a Valve Deckard. But to be realistic, it probably is not coming anytime soon, because the Valve Deckard is likely to run on some type of Linux operating system (either a SteamOS console streaming wirelessly to the Deckard, or a standalone Deckard VR console like the Quest 3). And have you tried SteamVR on Linux lately? At best, you can get games to work maybe like 60% of the time.

It's not even close to being ready to be a feature of a consumer electronics VR product. SteamVR doesn't even let me view my Steam library in VR yet. I have to take off the headset go over to my PC and look at the monitor to launch games lol. It doesn't work yet on Linux like it does on Windows... not even close.

But the Deckard is definitely coming. I think first we will see a SteamOS Linux console, probably announced (if not released) in 2025. The Deckard will probably arrive within a few years of that console release, and will likely connect to the console wirelessly to run PC VR games, and to play flatscreen games from a player's Steam library on a large virtual screen in VR.

Since the Deckard will likely run either directly or indirectly on SteamVR for Linux, that means you probably should not expect the Valve Deckard to arrive until we start seeing a lot of improvements to SteamVR on Linux, which I don't think we've been seeing much of lately.

Sure SteamVR on Linux is getting better, but I think most of that improvement is just accidental improvements that result from development of Proton for the Steam Deck flatscreen gaming experience.

I'd start watching for signs of the Deckard in 2026 at the earliest, and probably more likely 2027 or 2028... especially considering "Valve time."

What distro are you using? Iirc, on Ubuntu it worked perfectly for me (the games that ran on linux atleast). I switched back to windows because of game compatibility, and one other reason, but I cant remember. I think it was fpsvr not working or something

It's not only a question of whether Windows VR games work on Linux, it's also a question of whether the features of SteamVR work on Linux. Like on Windows there re lots of ways to look at flatscreen games in SteamVR, or look at your PC desktop in VR, and none of those work for me on Ubuntu. I can't even launch VR games from inside the VR headset on Ubuntu... if I click the button to show my Steam library in the headset, it doesn't show up on Linux like it would on Windows. So I have to take off the headset and walk over to the PC and put my glasses on and click on the game in my Steam app on the PC to launch it, then take glasses off and put the VR headset back on.

It's not a smooth experience like it is on Windows. Some games don't run right away, some basic SteamVR features don't even work at all like they would on Windows.

And on Windows, all of this stuff "just works" without any troubleshooting.

I'm not complaining about needing to troubleshoot things on Linux.. that's not the issue.

The point is that Valve is not going to release the Valve Deckard when SteamVR on Linux functions this badly. If Valve releases a Deckard headset running a SteamOS operating system, they will want it to have a smooth experience for users, and SteamVR seems like it's just not at that point yet.

December 2025 is basically next year... and is more or less in line with my 2026-2028 Deckard prediction.

But whatever, I guess this is a case where I'd be happy to be wrong.

Still all I've seen so far about the Deckard are purported leaks and rumors. Still seems a bit
speculative until we get the word from Valve.
