It's not only a question of whether Windows VR games work on Linux, it's also a question of whether the features of SteamVR work on Linux. Like on Windows there re lots of ways to look at flatscreen games in SteamVR, or look at your PC desktop in VR, and none of those work for me on Ubuntu. I can't even launch VR games from inside the VR headset on Ubuntu... if I click the button to show my Steam library in the headset, it doesn't show up on Linux like it would on Windows. So I have to take off the headset and walk over to the PC and put my glasses on and click on the game in my Steam app on the PC to launch it, then take glasses off and put the VR headset back on.
It's not a smooth experience like it is on Windows. Some games don't run right away, some basic SteamVR features don't even work at all like they would on Windows.
And on Windows, all of this stuff "just works" without any troubleshooting.
I'm not complaining about needing to troubleshoot things on Linux.. that's not the issue.
The point is that Valve is not going to release the Valve Deckard when SteamVR on Linux functions this badly. If Valve releases a Deckard headset running a SteamOS operating system, they will want it to have a smooth experience for users, and SteamVR seems like it's just not at that point yet.
December 2025 is basically next year... and is more or less in line with my 2026-2028 Deckard prediction.
But whatever, I guess this is a case where I'd be happy to be wrong.
Still all I've seen so far about the Deckard are purported leaks and rumors. Still seems a bit
speculative until we get the word from Valve.
