Also there is a full kit that has headset, controllers and base stations. Then those components are available separately as well. It is beneficial to keep the number of SKUs as low as possible.
Yes there is. Because it's still arguably the best headset overall, despite its age.
And that aside, if they can charge $1000 and it still sells, then that's a good reason to charge $1000.
Because Valve Index controllers have the best tracking, and even track finger movement. Premium controllers come at a premium price.
They're so good they are bundled with third party headsets because everyone recognizes how good they are. I'm not aware of many other VR controllers that are sold in that way because most of them are lower quality than the Valve Index controllers.
Again, premium controllers... command a premium price. Deal with it.
Valve is arguably much more pro-consumer than many other VR companies. Unlike those companies, Valve doesn't make its VR games hardware-exclusive. And also funds Linux compatibility projects like Steam Proton to give consumers more choices in operating systems used for gaming. No other VR company does that.
There's the real reason you are complaining... your own financial inadequacy, not Valve being "anti-consumer."
hopefully index 2 will release soon. I sold my index a year ago after playing mostly everything and I kinda miss VR
I dont belive that Higt-end VR is the goal of the main producers and development in next 1-2 years.
The thing is, they don't need to sell it. All of valve's hardware projects are vanity projects. They get their money from steam itself. They don't care if they sell 1000 of them a year or 1, it doesn't effect their bottom line at all. And best of all since they're the ones who compile the top seller list they can always keep it in the top seller list :D.
I should add, if you're actually looking for a headset you shouldn't buy an index at this point. Everything is better. Shop around, there's a lot of headsets on the market nowadays. Only reason to buy an index now is if you specifically want to give the money to valve, and if that's the case I don't see why the price would bother you.
What third party headsets get bundled with knuckles? I am unaware of any. Pimax used to while they were transitioning to their knuckles ripoff handsets but they're the only one I can think of and they don't do it anymore.
