Displayport Adapter for a Laptop

My friend has a laptop that lacks dp. Is there any way he can connect the Index using hdmi or usb-c?

Not unless it has a lightning USB-C port which carries display. This solution would also require a lightning to DP adapter as well, but unless just tinkering, it might simply be an indication that the laptop is not quite up to the requirements for the index unfortunately, as most gaming laptops that meet the specs would have a displayport/mini displayport onboard.

So, its the end of 2022, and there is now an Amazon Lawsuit against Acer, and other companies claiming to sell "VR Ready Laptops" that do not specify "Meta Quest 2" becuase most computers can Run the Quest 2 its a false advertisement suit, i fell for it. And becuase of it, im basically out of work as my desktop has died. If you have purchased a VR Ready Laptop that Doesnt work From Amazon you may be in luck and could get your money back.

The law suit is bogus. It use to work and Facebook broke it. They appear they want to work on fixing the issue. VIrtual Desktop fixed my acer problem. My laptop use to work with Oculus software BTW. My virtual Deskop works just fine with SteamVR and multi GPU. All problems resolved.

ohh regarding that USB-C display port. SOME acers come with a plain jane usb-c without display port but you can use the HDMI. Some do with a (DP)"display port" USB-C but it needs to say in the manual and it also says on the side of the USB-C with a symbol "DP".

I can confirm that mini-dp to dp converter worked for me. you can find a cheap one on amazon. just check for a review confirming that the specific dongle works. some don't.
