Warning - do not buy the Index headset, there is a clear failure rate among them
If these headsets sit out in your office and not in an uncovered location away from the sunlight, they will degrade and you will have errors in the vision ports. These are not replaceable nor are they repairable and they are not covered under Valve's warranty.

This is, essentially, a $500 paperweight with an extremely high failure rate.

Why are you posting this again on your alt?

Also, all VR headsets get sun damage, this has nothing to do with the Index.

On a $500 headset? Yes, shockingly, the entire earth is covered in sunlight for half of its time, you'd think this would've been some sort of a priority in development. But no, it's a cheap piece of garbage sold for half a grand.

Short of having a mechanical shutter that automatically shuts to protects the screens when not in use, I don't see how you expect them to protect the screens against the sun. Also, this would increase weight and complexity.

Look the index is not perfect. It had issues with the cable clip, stick drift, the base station dying and other various QA issues but this is clearly user error. There is no magic solution here. No headset will tolerate having their internals exposed to concentrated sunlight for any extended periods of time. You should be more careful with your stuff, man.

By concentrated sunlight did you mean..sitting on a computer desk?

No headset can withstand the awesome force of being in a home office?

It's a $500 paperweight.

concentrated sunlight. As in, what happens when you have sunlight and concentrate it with a lens. Like say, the 2 lenses in the headset. It's really not complicated.

A "failure rate" that derives from you being dumb enough to let sunlight magnify-burn your screens in headset, to which Valve will STILL replace it for you. ;)

They don't, they won't.

Does your office have windows to let the sun in? Might the sunlight have fallen on the lenses? Might those lenses have focued and magnified the sunlight against the screen?

Most of the rooms in my house, not shockingly, have windows in them.

Why is literally one of the most common things on earth DAMAGING to this headset?

Gigantic design flaw. Stupid design flaw. ♥♥♥♥ headset that is now a paperweight that people need to avoid purchasing.

Because the lenses acts a magnifier and the screens are fragile?

Cover it, like it's also mentioned in every single thread on reddit regarding tips for a new VR owner.

The only one responsible for destroying your headset by sunlight is yourself and your lack of research on how to treat a $1000 device.

Dude.... you're complaining about something which is on all vr headsets. I know you're probably pretty salty about breaking your headset from leaving it in the sun, but that is entirely your fault and NOT a design flaw. If you watch any review or any video about any VR headset you would be warned to not leave it in the sun. The whole reason the lenses are like that is to reduce the size of the headset.

Yeah, sounds like a serious design flaw from a shoddy piece of equipment.

Nah it’s not, it is what it is.

Speaking of flaws, a pretty big one of those is to not being able to own up to own mistakes and then blame others for their ignorance.

What are you, 10?
