Not only is the SDE MUCH less noticeable (nearly non existent) but about 90% of the screen is visually clear for me. With my Vive, only the center 10% was clear. I had to aim my head in order to read text on my desktop. Now it's basically all clear in the Index!
If you have the cash, it's worth the upgrade to the Index. (and I'm only on a GTX 1060 too!) FYI: the LCD screen (which has RGB sub pixels) is why the SDE is reduced. However this means the blacks and dark grays are not as deep as the Vive. But it's a worthwhile trade off in my mind.
So no, the Index doesn't really have SDE, it's just that in the last years we have so much used to displays in high PPI, that we have forgotten what displays looked like. You can see the pixels slighlty on the Index, but even for me, who has been hating the rift ever since day 2, the Index has this problem solved.
