Valve Index Headset

Valve Index Headset

Solved! - HMD on but not on?
I'm switching from the Vive HMD to the Index HMD using the new cables and not the Vive breakout box. My computer shows the HMD as connected and there are no error codes in Steam. The screens in the HMD are off. Yet if I turn on the "Display VR View" and walk the headset around the room, I can see the VR space tracking as if the headset were working, but the LCDs in the headset are 100% not powered on. Any ideas?

I hooked my Vive HMD back up via the breakout box and it is working just fine and I can use the new controllers. The only real difference I see between the Vive and the Index connections to the PC is that the breakout box uses the HDMI connection on my video card, whereas the Index requires I use one of the remaining display port connections (I've tried all 3 including the one my main monitor is plugged into).

I also switched the main monitor to the HDMI port and then only had the Index HMD on the display port. Still nothing. Steam shows it connected and tracking, yet nothing in the display. It's like they aren't powered up but the plug running into the headset is firmly plugged in.

Other info: clean install of Win 10 - latest version. AMD R9 Nano with latest drivers.

For anyone that runs across this, I went out and bought a 2080 after reading the AMD R9 cards were having an issue. Sure enough, it booted right up with the 2080 installed.

"Buy another graphics card" is not really a solution to the problem. It's avoiding the problem. Either way, have fun with your headset.

totally agree with it not being the right solution, I was just in a severe time pinch. In the end it still didn't work out as the right LCD is broken. It has tons of fixed, vertical green/blue lines running the length of the right panel and off on the edges of that panel, nothing but grey. When I close my right eye, it the HMD tracks really smoothly and the text is very clear through the working left LCD. So I'm back to my Vive (albeit with the new controllers) until Valve can reply to my email so I can get a replacement. I guess the new card at least helped me figure out I had a busted HMD quicker.

Bummer to hear that. I never switched back to the R9 to see if they fixed it. The headset is great BTW once you get it all working...especially if you are coming from the original vive.

The R9 cards are confirmed as not supported by Valve (if you contact Steam support). Some work, some don't. If yours does not, you've only got one option which is to get a newer Nvidia GPU. They might be crushing it with their CPU's and the GPUS are a good choice for desktop gaming but when it comes to VR, Nvidia is miles ahead with much better support.
