When is valve launching the next gen Valve Index?
Hi, I wonder if this is a good time to buy the Valve index or wait until the next gen, because this one was realeased in 2019, and we are Q3 2021. Is it something planned to 2022? Thanks

I definitely wouldn't wait, particularly if you have a lot of time to spend at home because of COVID-19.

I will say this... I saw the Valve Index, decided to wait for something cheaper/better. The next headset of interest that came along was the HP Reverb G2.

And the Valve Index was still better in so many different ways I decided to get it anyway.

So I waited and basically got burned. And because of COVID-19, VR headsets were flying off the shelves faster than they could be produced, so I had to wait another 3 months from that point before I finally got my Valve Index. And then another couple months before I could find computer parts in-stock to build the PC to run it (because I had decided to wait for RTX 3000 GPUs and AMD Ryzen 5000 series CPUs). So I thought I was waiting a few months, and ended up waiting more than a full year. Again, all because of COVID-19 and my bad decisions to wait. And now we have the Delta variant, which people are saying will likely cause more lockdowns!

It makes me sick to think of how much gaming time I missed out on during the lockdowns because I waited on the computer parts and the Valve Index.

I would also suggest you aren't getting the value you should be out of that RTX 3080 if you aren't putting it to use running a VR headset playing all the many incredible VR games there are. By the time there is a VR headset sufficiently better than the Valve Index, RTX 4080s will probably be either available or soon-to-be released.

I feel you man. Something similar happen to me, about a whole new PC with 3080. I was about buy something in december 2020 and then no stock, prizes so hight...but then I finally managed to get a very good deal in may 2021. Then I recently got a 4k monitor so im ready to get some PCVR and thats why im here. Well, in this case, I dont mind to wait because this is not for me as important as a PC or monitor. You have reason about the 4000series approach. I have to think about it, because steam valve index is something I like, but I would appreciate lower prices after 2 years since release date, thats the only thing that annoy me. Some people is telling me that oculust quest 3 is coming next yeah and well, it doesnt not seem that index II is coming soon...im very confused still.

If you go to the Steam store front page and click "top sellers," you will see that the Valve Index is still the #4 top selling item on Steam right now. Even so many years after its release.

Just ask yourself this question: why would Valve cut the price on the Index if it's still near the top of the sales charts on Steam? That would make no sense. Any businessman would keep the price as high as they can while still getting lots of sales so they make more money.

So as long as the Index continues to sell a lot, Valve has no reason to cut the price. Why reduce prices if they are still selling out?

If you're worried about an Index 2 release coming soon, maybe just getting the Vive Pro 2 is your best option.

Can I ask you an honest question..

What are all those incredible VR games?
I have around 250 in my library after getting the Index and most of it I wouldn't even label bloatware.
Half Life Alyx was absolutely awesome, The Walking Dead was great, made it half way till I got bored but cool style, Boneworks meh I mean it's okay I guess, I only had 7 hrs to spare for it, Lone Echo is super cool but it keeps crashing, Asgards wrath runs 45 fps on my 3080 - can't be bothered with that, and that's pretty much it. I'm out. I don't know what to play anymore and I just keep buying games I spend about 10 minutes playing until I'm sick of the horrible performance, copy/paste gameplay and ridiculous index controller support. If even.

Where VR shines, at least for me, are the google earths, the universe sandbox and other sorts of VR awesomeness but they only go so far.

So I'm asking you, what are all these "incredible VR games there are" because I either missed them or am way to picky for this medium.

Due to global supply issues (china) i doubt any new VR headsets come out for awhile.

As well as the following Oculus games:
Vader Immortal 1
Vader Immortal 2
Vader Immortal 3
Asgard's Wrath
Lone Echo
Lone Echo 2 (when it releases)

The following are games that you might want to consider because they are from AAA corporate developers of the sort most gamers like, but their ratings from Steam users aren't so great... so they might have some issues you have to troubleshoot or fix to get to an enjoyable level:

Borderlands 2 VR

Fallout 4 VR

Batman: Arkham VR:

There are also VR apps you can use for watching movies and TV on a big virtual screen, and also 3D movies, which can provide many hours of entertainment:

Occasionally with gaming on a PC, you need to do some troubleshooting. For games like Lone Echo and Asgard's Wrath, that is obviously worth doing.

The latter might be your problem. There are a lot of people that will only play games from large brand-name corporate developers, and that prevents them from experiencing a lot of good indie games.

A lot of people also are afraid to try games outside their favored genre or game type. So while I personally get excited about action FPS games like Call of Duty in my flat games, I discovered in VR I actually very much enjoy various music and rhythm games like Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, and Ragnarock; and also air & space flight combat simulation games like Star Wars: Squadrons that I play with my HOTAS setup and a VR headset (no VR controllers).

The bottom line with VR is that it's a completely different gaming experience from flat games. And so the only way to know what you like is to try lots of different things, including game types that would not normally appeal to you if they were flat games. Just check the Steam reviews for a given indie title before you buy to make sure it isn't garbage. If it says "overwhelmingly positive," odds are good you'll like it even if you wouldn't usually think of it as being your preferred type of game.

Vive Pro 2 is an acceptable choice, however, it's not considered an alternative. It's just a different choice. It's up to you to decide if you want either.

Is not an alternative option a different choice?

What I mean is, if you're looking for something that is equal to the Index, a Vive Pro 2 isn't it, its separate, such as differently weighted, different resolution, different pixel density, etc.
