Gaming laptop?
Can I run a Index properly from a high end gaming laptop, or do you need a desk-top computer?

you can as long as it has the right Displayport connection....be sure to verify they are not all the same.

So with the right DP gaming laptops are powerful enough to run VR games without problem?

Lol you could probably play it on a laptop if you want to pay 5x the price for the same performance you could get with a desktop.

Actually, I got a laptop last year on Black Friday: an ASUS Tuf A15, with an RTX2060 and Ryzen 9. If it wasn't for the HDMI port, it'd be a great system for the Index since it was only $999 on sale.

That being said, the issue is why you have to ask about a laptop in the first place. Usually, this implies you plan to move around to different locations, which the Index isn't really suited for. Remember, you need the light houses for it to work, which either means tripods or ceiling support rods if you want portability, and even that's a stretch.

If you are going to keep it in one spot, then there isn't much of a need for a laptop, unless you accept that the index will be in one space, and that you can disconnect from your laptop if you plan to do non-vr stuff. If you want portability and are okay with Facebook, I'd suggest an Oculus Quest 2, since you'll most likely get that sooner than the Index and for a far lower price, and that can run as portable as your laptop and would act as a great companion in that front.

honestly if you want to use a laptop and move around.... Index and outside in tracking might not be for you. Maybe the Quest2 will suit better if u wanna be moving around to differant places to play.....

That laptop has a USB-C port that doubles as a display port.

There's no guarantee it will work. USB-C DP can be hardwired to _either_ built-in GPU or a discrete one. Index requires it to be wired to a discrete one to work. To learn which one is yours, plug a monitor into your USB-C, launch nVidia Control panel and see how the monitors are wired in "Set PhysX Configuration". But I've never seen it working myself TBH.
Mini DP, on the other hand, works well for me with latest drivers, steam VR and firmware updates for the HMD itself.

As long as it has the right video output and a powerful enough video card, sure. I'm still running Alyx on a 1080 series card, until I can find a 3000 series in stock. If you're willing to spend the bux on a lappy with 2000 series card in it, absolutely.

Some people put them in backpacks specifically for a near-untethered VR experience.

I was planning to keep the vr valve put. And travel only with my labtop. I got the alienware area 51 labtop. It's vr ready but I wasn't expecting a diffent port. What transformer do I need?
