But still: the alternative would be: stay with my Rift (low resolution and small FOV) forever...
I've been waiting for a "Rift 2" (which should be exactly the same like Rift 1 but only wider FOV and higher resolution IMHO) but it didn't come. Oculus follows a differnt strategy for the mass market.
So I could keep waiting or starting to order a different product and hope that it will ship some day...
But anywho, from the reviews that i saw (in week 10 after seriously considering of abandoning the index), the pimax , although having a huge FOV, suffers from distortions on fast movement.
Now those reviews were pretty old, so i wouldn't know if this is still an issue( and since i've already waited so many months for the index, i guess i could wait a couple more months)
There is lot more to say about this topic. But do good research AND the best way to discover it is something for you is go to a store to put the index on your head and see to feel if it works for you is the best way for everyone to make a purchase or not.
Up to your questions and I try to answer them.
1) Compared to the oculus rift, not so much. In general the view is more clear.
2) Some game does not compare to others from oculus store reading through comments same is with the pimax headsets. There are issues with collors here but not as big as some say. I played with pimax 5 and 8 serie and if you want one of those go for the 5 one and the fov is awsome ofcourse.
3) The index does not work with oculus sensors so you need the ones for the index. The older from the vive works with index but you want to use the version for the index as they are improved. If put in the right possition the 2 sensors are good enough for tracking 360.
4) I have not tried this one yet. I asume it would have not be a problem if you have the software installed onto seperate drives then again it might still give connection interferences so i have read in a comment. ( I think i seen it on a youtube vid, where guy have tried the same). Again I did not have tried thisi myself. I guess you should experiment if might work or not. If you do will you let us know? :)
5) Remember the FOV is awsome in the pimax series (ive tried them both like I said before) and did like it overall. However then, many games could not deal with the FOV ingame and some games like assetto corsa (and another flight game wich name i forget) seem to be more or less streched out ingame wich gives a mere odd gameplay and did not looked good at all.
Collors and graphics wa amazingly good however, but the one thing was it was on experimental basis so I dont know how it went from there and might be more or less due to a driver upgrade beter for today.
As last you could always write to an developer or company and ask to try out a headset and see if you like this. We have done this with many products for vr usage for study and or experimental use. It is good way to 'get the feel for it' and you have the luck to get into contact directly with company for further enclosure for the products you want to purchase.
Hope It workes out for you and remember that everyones eyes are diverent, meaning if for me lets say the index in this case, does not compute for me, it should not be the same way for you.
Therefore the urge again I say try to be able to put it on your head yourself to see if the hwole system computes for you!
namasté 🙏
Yeah, trying out other headsets before buying would be the best idea. Unfortunately in my country almost no shop has VR-headsets to try. They don't even sell them, so I'm forced to order/buy them online. But I don't know if it would be easy to send a headset back and get my money back if I wouldn't like it because it's already used then...
I hope that VR will become more popular and then maybe the stores will have it and give the possibility to try it. I remember that in one store they actually had an Oculus S and Quest but they didn't allow it to try it. They said Oculus doesn't want this and the consumers in the store would probably destroy it...
The more interesting headsets for me like Index, Reverb 2 or Pimax aren't available at all in the stores and even online (as we can see here in the Steam shop) they are not available.
Yeah, maybe I'll play the waiting game for other upcoming next gen VR headsets like I did the last years already.
With Facts you also could Upgrade to the Oculus Quest (+PC Link) and you get constant Updates & Fixxes & Improvements
As mentioned the Queue is very long for the Index and with CoVid this will not change so soon. So ask yourself if it is worth it atm.
to Question 2 : USe Revive. then you can play any Oculus Games.
3) the Index Basestations have Tracking 2.0 instead of 1.0 but they also tend to break and you will have to RMA so think about it if its needed (yet)
So overall if you Switch there is no need to switch both Headsets you can and should use Revive.
i recommend if your rift still is fine wait till 2021 and see if the Situation gets better OR buy the Quest + Pc Link + Accessories to make the Headstrap better then you have a good headset for now even tho the FOV still is 90 ? or so
I'm looking at Pimax.com 5K which I can get now. The 8K also looks good but they say shipping will start in a month. From what I have been reading the Index is a tight fit because I wear glasses and I do not like the wait time.
Now I wait for delivery and hope it wasn’t a big mistake. But no risk no fun... ;-)
